I've just written my first fic (and first anything, really) since last March! Oh my gosh! Big thanks to
hpgw_drabbles for inspiring me with this month's prompt: Platform 9 and 3/4.
Title: September 1, 2023
Words: 484
Rating: G
Summary: Chaos in the Potter home on the morning of September 1.
Author's Note: This is pretty much all dialogue, but I thought it helped with the chaotic tone. I'm hoping I have the date right. From what I've gathered, James probably started at Hogwarts in 2016, and this is his final year.
“Dad, have you seen Jinx?”
“I haven’t seen your cat, Al. Why don’t you look in the backyard.”
“Mum, I need my dress robes! The letter said we had to have them!”
“I just put them in your trunk, Lil. Have you checked there?”
“James, where are you? Are you packed?”
“I’ve been ready for three days, Dad! We’ve got to hurry, I told Miriam we would be there at ten thirty.”
“I’m sure your girlfriend won’t mind you being a few minutes late.”
“Isn’t your boyfriend waiting for you, Lily?”
“Boyfriend? What boyfriend is he talking about?”
“Harry, calm down; she’s fourteen, she’s allowed to have a boyfriend.”
“Mum’s right! James was in fourth year when he started dating Miriam.”
“Lily dear, please don’t push your father. He’s very silly about boys.”
“I still can’t find Jinx, Dad!”
“Ginny, why did we let Al get a cat?”
“We could have bought him a rat....”
“No! No rats!”
“Mum, where did you put my new quills?”
“Honestly, Lily, have you even looked inside your trunk this morning?”
“Al, are these your Quidditch gloves?”
“Thanks, Dad! I knew I’d forgotten something. I still haven’t found....”
“...I’ve just found Jinx! He was asleep in my trunk!”
“Thanks, Lil!”
“Now, Lily, about this boyfriend of yours...do I know him?”
“This is why I didn’t tell you, Dad.”
“James Sirius Potter, what is that in your pocket?”
“Um...nothing, it’s just....”
“Harry!”
“We will finish this conversation later, young lady.”
“We don’t have time for this conversation. Al, can you help me take my trunk downstairs?”
“Our son apparently found your hiding spot and was planning on taking the map to Hogwarts this year.”
“Oh...no! I’ll take care of this, Ginny.”
“Lily, what do you have in this thing? Wingardium....”
“...Albus, don’t even try it! You know you can’t use magic until you’re on the train.”
“Come on, mum! Just one little spell?”
“James, you weren’t supposed to let your mother see the map!”
“I don’t know how she saw it!”
“It’s your mum, James; she sees everything.”
“Alright then, I think we’re all ready to go! Quick, Harry, we have to get everything outside...and don’t you dare let James keep that map.”
“Jinx, come back here!”

Harry stood with his wife, watching the train roll into the distance from Platform 9 ¾. He could hear Hermione next to him, trying to hide her sniffles as her eyes started to fill with tears, and he could see Ron trying not to chuckle - it was like this every year.
“Your know,” Harry started, putting his arm around Ginny’s shoulders, “I think I’m really going to miss the chaos next year when we’ve only got Al and Lily to get to the train.”
Ginny smiled and looked up at her husband. “Well, we could always try for a fourth.”
“On second thought, a bit of a break never hurt anyone.”
