Remus hurried threw the busy London streets, ducking and dodging people as he went. He knew Tonks would have his head if he didn’t get home soon, but unfortunately for him it was Christmas Eve, and it seemed that nearly every inhabitant in all of England was out tonight, giving him no safe place to Apparate from.
Finally he was able to find a tiny alley to duck into, and quickly Apparated to the living room of their flat. “You’re late!” He heard a voice call out from the kitchen. “You were supposed to be home twenty minutes ago. You know I’m a rubbish cook!”
Remus couldn’t help but smile to himself as he entered their small kitchen, and found Tonks madly waving her wand about, trying to get the roast beef to stop smoking. “Nym, do you need some help?” Remus asked.
“Everything’s done, but I can’t seem to get this bloody thing to stop smoking. I don’t even know what I did to it!”
“Here, let me help,” Remus flicked his wand, and with one simple movement the smoke stopped. “What time are you parents supposed to be here?”
“Half an hour,” Tonks gave one final check of her dinner line up, and looked up at Remus. “Do you think it’s okay?”
“I think it looks wonderful,” Remus kissed her quickly, smiling. “Now come on, we have gifts to exchange before your mother and father get here.”
A girlish grin appeared on Tonks face, and she grabbed Remus’ hand, dashing into the living room. “I almost forgot!” She knelt in front of the tree and started shaking gifts, trying to pick out the one she found most intriguing. “You’re sure you don’t want to swap two?”
“Only one on Christmas Eve, it’s the rule.” Remus took the box she held in her hand and replaced it with another, smaller one. “And this is the one I’d like you to pick.”
“Alright, but if you get to choose for me, then I get to choose for you.” She shook the package a bit before untying the silver bow and ripping open the red paper.
There was a small, plain wooden box, no bigger than Tonks’ hand. “Thanks Remus,” a quizzical look appeared on her face as she tried to smile. “I’ve always wanted a box.”
“You’re supposed to open it, Tonks.”
“Oh, thank Merlin,” she started to take off the lid. “I was worried I’d have to try and like….Remus?”
Inside the box laid a small gold band, atop which, a single square cut diamond sat. Remus knelt in front of Tonks as she stared at the small ring. “I know we haven’t really spoken about it much, but Nym, I love you. I can be a right nasty bugger at times, and you have the tendency to drive me half insane, but I can think of nothing I’d rather do than spend the rest of my life not knowing what you’re about to do next.” He picked up the ring and took her hand.
Without answering, Tonks slipped her finger into the ring, and grabbed Remus, kissing him hard. “Yes!” she answered between kisses.
Laughing, Remus wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her to the floor. “Even though I’m nothing but an old, penniless, werewolf?”
“Because you are an old, penniless, werewolf,” she smiled, kissing him again. “Oh! I almost forgot. I still have to give you your present!”
“Well, you said ‘yes,’ I think that’s enough,” Remus chuckled as Tonks slipped out of his arms to grab his gift.
“I’ve wanted to give this to you for two weeks,” she offered him the package as he sat back up. “Hurry and open it!”
Remus ripped through the paper, and stared, transfixed at the gift inside. Tonks smiled coyly, and rested her head on his shoulder. “Nym?” he asked, confusion and excitement in his eyes as he turned to face her.
“Remus, do you remember about a month and a half ago when we forgot the contraceptive charm?” He nodded. “Well, it looks like we won’t have to worry about that for another eight months or so.”
