Prelude to Vengeance.
Siegfried can't believe this. Seto Kaiba has stolen his idea. His plans! He meant to present Pegasus with his plans for a dueling system and instead, Pegasus is standing up there with Seto Kaiba and shaking his hand and smiling for the press and Seto Kaiba has won.
Siegfried will not accept that. Contracts can be broken. If he can prove to Pegasus that Seto stole his idea, then surely Pegasus will back out. It's intellectual theft. It has to violate some laws (a violation of ethics will not be enough to destroy a contract between Industrial Illusions and Kaiba Corp) and therefore, Siegfried will have a second chance. The world will know that Seto Kaiba is a thief, and a liar, and Kaiba Corp will be destroyed.
This time, Siegfried thinks with a smirk, Seto Kaiba has overreached himself.
He waits until the press conference is over. For once, the way that the media are so quick to praise Seto Kaiba's drive/ambition/choice of trenchcoats doesn't annoy Siegfried. The more that they talk about Kaiba Corp's new invention now, the more they will talk once Seto Kaiba is exposed for the fraud that he is.
Siegfried thinks of the American expression 'the bigger they are, the harder they fall' and remembers that he has seen Kaiba Corp's tall towers on picture postcards of Domino. They are a defining mark in the city, a landmark by which people navigate and Seto Kaiba is the posterchild for the new wave of the young CEOs taking over industry.
He vows that will change soon and ambushes Pegasus in his hotel room.
It's late in the night, but not so late that Pegasus should be asleep. Siegfried doesn't want anyone to see him going in and possibly alert Seto Kaiba to his presence. If Seto bursts in before Siegfried can convince Pegasus, it could be disastrous. Siegfried might not get a second chance like this.
He knocks on the door and waits. Pegasus opens it, holding a glass of red wine and dressed in a pair of pyjamas with a bunny print. Siegfried ignores that and starts into his speech with no preamble, knowing he has very little time to engage Pegasus' interest. "Seto Kaiba stole my plans and presented them to you as his, and I can prove it."
It's a clear statement but instead of looking shocked, Pegasus simply laughs. "I know, Schroeder-boy."
He brushes his hair away from his face to reveal a golden eye. It reveals a golden eye set into his socket, but Siegfried's too shocked at Pegasus' answer to react to the ugliness. "Du--" He starts off in his native German, then switches to English, "You know? Kaiba told you?"
"Kaiba-boy didn't tell me in so many words, but it was obvious to me. " Pegasus' laugh sounds to Siegfried like a drunk man's giggle. Like a hyena's, Siegfried thinks spitefully, shock starting to fade into anger.
"But if you knew, then why did you make a contract with him? Those were my plans you presented as the reason Industrial Illusions worked with Kaiba Corp. You should have made the contract with Schroeder Corp instead." Siegfried can't make sense of this.
Pegasus giggles again and sips at his wine, "Ah, but Schroeder-boy, it's not about the designs. It's about the person." He traces the rim of the glass with a fingertip and smiles at Siegfried over the top of it, lush-lipped and somehow vile, "Kaiba-boy's the type to be a success. You..." And his gaze rakes over Siegfried and somehow, Siegfried feels the fake golden eye sees more than Pegasus' living brown one, "Are not."
The hotel door is shut in Siegfried's face and in its slam, he can hear the slamming of all the doors that a contract with Industrial Illusions would've opened. He can hear Pegasus' scathing (accurate?) assessment of him.
He inhales, then exhales, self-discipline too tight to let him mourn this. He vows instead to be stronger so that one day, he will take down Kaiba Corp and Industrial Illusions first.
Seto Kaiba first, though. He is the thief who started this all, and Siegfried wants Pegasus to know that he was wrong before Siegfried turns his attention to him.
