1; Mostly Dead

So this is death? Or the afterlife? Underworld? Hm? I think I'm lost for words, but only because I don't know of one that combines 'dull' and 'irksome' as well as I'd like.

Hm...

I wonder if Bartimaeus is here. That'd be fitting.

Actually, this is the City, and you--

You...

...Bartimaeus?

Oh, god. Another city. Just when I got out of London.

Yes. He goes by Sakhr al-Jinni sometimes, and some other ones, if that rings any bells.

The City, if you want to be technical, but-- London? You were in...

Bartimaeus. About 5000. Bit on the sarcastic side. Tends to be a little full of himself. Mentions speaking with Solomon a lot. Prefers the form of Ptole a young Egyptian boy.

...That Bartimaeus?

The City, then. Creative name.

The very one. You summoned him, I take it?

Me? Summon a spirit? Don't be ridiculous, that's slavery, I'd never...

It was slavery and you bloody well know it. And stop with the innocent act, it doesn't suit you.

I only wanted to ask you a question. You didn't have to be so snippy about it.

You'd be snippy too if you'd been summoned for nearly a full year. You pulled me away from the Other Place.

But if I hadn't done it then we'd never have talked, and I'd never have found out about Ptolemy or the Gate or-- aren't you glad things turned out the way they did?

Well, I did summon him once. But that was different. I'm not a magician.

...You're a djinni, I presume?

Not a magician and you summoned Bartimaeus? That's rather embarrasing. No wonder he never told be of you.

That I am.

It's really not that hard, once you know how. Just a few markings and a pentacle and reciting some archaic language. But that's not the point. We have a rather... unique relationship.

If you don't mind my asking, where were you before you came here? Where in London? What were you doing?

I wouldn't know, I'm usually only on the recieving end.

'Unique' is a good way to describe any relationship with Bartimaeus.

I was summoned by Ffoukes to watch the National Gallery for any... problems. Turned out to be a golem, and, well... that was the end of me.

I was sort of on the receiving end once. When I... ah, never mind. That was rather unique too.

...How long have you known him?

Ffoukes. Worked in Internal Affairs, didn't he? So Bartimaeus didn't know me when he was with you. And you... oh. The golem. I'm sorry. If it makes you feel any better... I got rid of it.

Now that is a story you'll have to save for later, dear.

Mm, we go back a bit, since Prauge. Or, the seige of it, anyway.

I don't know if he knew you or not, we don't generally talk about commoners durring jobs. He described his master as 'having a girl and a bottle in the same hand'?

You defeated a golem? Good on you.

...Perhaps. I don't know how any other spirits would react to it.

A girl in one... right. That would be Na-- John Mandrake, yes? Well, I think Bartimaeus was overestimating his girl-related abilities. And his abilities to hold alcohol. And I wasn't that girl, no. If that girl existed. Which I doubt. But I'm sure you must have talked about me a little, if indirectly. The Resistance?
