Clinton vs. McCain

I was just wondering, am I the only liberal Democrat who would vote for John McCain before she would vote for Hillary Clinton? The thing is that I know that I disagree with McCain over a lot of issues, but I would rather have a president who has been to war, and is as ethical as politicians get before I would vote for someone who I think is extremely unethical and never had the military service. I don't think that military service makes or breaks a canidate, there are plenty of presidents who were great without serving, but I do think in our current situation (at war in Iraq and still occupying Afghanistan and the mistrust that the military has with the White House due to the mishandling of the war) that a Commander in Chief who knew what it was like to be a soldier and can talk to the Pentegon the way that it understands would be a good thing.

Why do I dislike Clinton? It could be sexism but I don't think it is (unfortunately women can be sexist toward other women). I've disliked her from her husband's first term. I know that people said her hands were tied and there was no way that anyone could have passed significant healthcare reform, but it was a Democrat House and Senate and we might have been able to accomplish something if Bill Clinton hadn't appointed his wife. And there's the bit about what a scum Bill Clinton is, and how the two of them have remained in their marriage despite. To a certain extent it is probably not my right to judge the point of someone's marriage, but it's weird and that weirdness influences what I think of Hillary. I also don't understand how when someone runs for President they can be a resident of Arkansas, but then when his wife runs for the Senate all of the sudden they are residents of NY. On one hand I know how that works, but I also think that's cheating like the way that Cheney is from Wyoming. I dislike her because I think she's smarmy, and while I think BIll was a better president than G.W. I didn't like Bill all that much either (yeah, I know, "oh the horror" because we're all suppposed to love Bill Clinton, but I think he's a sexist creep).

So, I know that I have many conservative friends, which I'm fine with (because that's not how I judge a person), but of my liberal friends on LJ am I crazy for preferring McCain despite my differences with him on the issues? Luther said he would rather have a good Turk for a king than a bad Christian. What he meant was that ethics are more important in the office then someone's belief and lately that's been my opinion of things as well.

politics, ethics
