As part of my fall sightseeing tour, I've decided to go beyond
Manhattan. Of course, some people may think that that's where New York
ends. And the other 4 boroughs and 2 states that compose the Tri-State
Area, are just a waste of space and time. While that may actually be
true for some areas, I've decided to step out my comfort zone and go
see some other sides of the city that 8 million people call home.
I've just come back from Brooklyn. It's actually quite nice. I was near
Atlantic Ave and Flatbush which is kind of... oh, I don't know... Park
Slope-ish? (Does that mean anything to you non-New York readers?) Very
nice, indeed. I went to Target to pick up a couple of things that
are undoubtedly cheaper on that side of the East River, and I went to
soak up a little ambience in the neighborhood. Going from neighborhood
to neighborhood and meeting people and asking questions really brings
out the sociologist in me. It occurred to me that some people do just
fine without the everday convenience of gentrification. Having to go
farther for what you need - and having it be less expensive - isn't
necessarily a bad thing! I also accomplished one of my life-long
ambitions: going to Chuck E. Cheese's.
That's right - I've never been. And I can say it out loud. I can admit
that I've missed an essential part of my childhood development. It's
never really been a priority, actually. I didn't have - or go to - very
many birthday parties until I was in high school, and by then I was old
enough to be wining (not really) and dining at (insert name of expensive restaurant here).
Being there made me feel like a kid, running around looking for new
games to play. It was nice. I like cherishing these fleeting moments of
peace. I'm rocketing toward midterms and papers and essays and tests
and so forth, and so it's very important for me to take a step back
while I still can...
And last night, I made an appearance at a party in Jersey City (that's in New Jersey, across the Hudson River).
Of course, now I'm at home. I'm about to get back to work, meaning that
the sightseeing tour will have to come to a close for now.
Maybe next week, Queens? The Bronx? Staten Island? Something to think about...
