A Sorely-Needed Update

A Sorely Needed Update

It’s hard to believe what has happened in the last couple of weeks since I offered a substantive update to my journal. For starters, I had a decent spring break, but the week before that was even more eventful. Rachael was here for the week. We spent time together Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and I introduced her to some of my friends. We had dinner, we talked, we laughed, we basked in the opulence of the Waldorf-Astoria, and yes, we saw a musical. A wonderful, brilliant musical called “The Musical of Musicals - The Musical!”

The week after that was my Spring Break. I didn’t do much but stay here in New York and work in the admissions office full time. I actually enjoyed the longer hours because that means more money, which can never hurt at all! I also established a great relationship with my supervisor, and was “promoted” to fill-in tour guide. I especially like my new position. I’m glad that I have been entrusted with the responsibility of representing my school on this higher level. It makes me feel like I am a part of something. I’m not just the filing boy, but I am a valuable addition to the staff of the office. That’s a great feeling.

Unfortunately, some bad stuff was entered into the mix. Terri Schaivo, Johnnie Cochran and Pope John Paul II died in the last 10 or so days. (I think in that order). I’ll briefly offer my thoughts on all three: Personally, I was/am sick of the Schaivo coverage. I hate when things become media circuses and I also hated the way the situation was treated. This woman was given no respect and inadvertently allowed bureaucrats and politicians to make her decisions for her. While we question the motives of her husband, we also hold in high regard the position of the family. I respect the family’s decision to keep her alive and wait for a miracle. I respect that a lot actually… But now I am glad that the news coverage has lessened. And I hope we learn some kind of lesson from this…

Johnnie Cochran will best be remembered for the “You must acquit” line in the OJ Simpson trial. I personally admired him for the talent, vigor and compassion he brought to law, and to the community. I believe that I will miss him greatly.

As for the Pontiff, I can’t say that I’m crushed. I’m not very religious, and I’m not at all Catholic, but I respect him for being a man of peace, trying to unify the world that is gradually losing faith in everything. I am quite aware of his accomplishments, and yes, his shortcomings. My only hope is that his death will not become politicized like most other things. I hope he will rest in peace, and people will also see him for the man that he tried to be.

What else has happened? I attended a friend’s church service on Easter, and I am antsy as all hell to get the hell out of here and have a terrific summer! My first semester of college is almost over. As the days draw near, I find that I am repeating a lot of what I did during my first days here - getting off at the 14th Street stop, going to Coldstone for the first few weeks, and even wearing some of the same stuff, because the weather is slowly changing for the better.  What’s more is I can’t wait for the Accepted Student’s Day in just a couple of weeks, where I will get to impart some of the pearls of wisdom that I have acquired during my time here.

In other news, I’ve been bonding more and more with my friend Kaitlyn. These days, I’m seeing her as more than just a drinking buddy, more than just a lesbian, more than just someone I can cuddle with, but as a friend - a good friend, a friend that I want to have around for a long, long time. She offers me so much perspective. She makes me see things so much clearer than I can. And she gives me good advice that I just can’t get anywhere else. For that and so many other things, I’m truly grateful. I’m very lucky that she’s a part of my life.

I think I just summed up the last few weeks. And now I’m off to “evil in the 20th century.” Feel free to leave comments. I’m sure some of the stuff I wrote has incited some responses in some people. So, bring them on…
