During the winter months, an ice rink appears in the park, open for the public to ice skate. Eikichi sat with his friend Ryuji on a bench, watching the patrons circle endlessly around the rink. “Girls wear too many layers during winter,” Eikichi said, staring hard at one of the females ice skating. She was wearing those lovely yoga pants that were a gift from the gods, but had a frilly skirt covering the goodies. “Did you really put ‘Well-Endowed’ on your resume? How do you expect to ever be hired?!” Ryuji scolded.

Eikichi took a long drag from his cigarette. Upon removing the cigarette, he put his lips in an “o” shape to do a smoke ring. Instead, smoke spewed from his mouth similarly to a dragon spewing fire. “Damn. I can never do that right,” he uttered.

“Come on, dude. I can’t keep carrying your weight anymore. You gotta get some kind of job so you can start paying bills. If I pay your half of the rent one more time, we’re gonna be without electricity.”

Casually as Ryuji lectured him, Eikichi dug into his pocket and removed an envelope that was well beat-up. He tapped the letter on his friend’s knee without breaking his eye sight from another female that was wearing the yoga pants without any obstruction.

“What’s this?” Ryuji said, taking the envelope. It was addressed to Eikichi, the return address listed as Gakuin High.

“A rejection letter,” he began, “or…and acceptance letter.”

Ryuji turned the letter over, examining the seal that was sure enough, never opened. “You haven’t looked at it?”

“Nope.” His tone was nonchalant as he took another drag of the cigarette.

Ryuji looked at his friend sympathetically. The things Eikichi did sometimes. Without asking, he tore the end of the envelope off. Neither said anything as he unfolded the letter, bringing it close to his face to read. “You got the job,” his tone of disbelief.

“Oi..?” He broke his line of vision from the ice skating babes this time to look at Ryuji.

“Dude. You got the job.” Excitement was beginning to fill Ryuji’s voice. “You got the job! They heard about how you can handle delinquents, so they gave you the job. You start in January.”

Eikichi snatched the letter, his cigarette looming close to the paper. “No fucking way.”
