The first time Jin met Kame, it was a little awkward. The younger boy was sitting alone in a cafeteria, sipping carefully on his coffee when Jin rushed past his table, accidentally bumping into him. It was the boy’s loud yelp that made Jin turn, stopping dead on his track when he saw the mess he had caused and thus losing his balance. He ended up falling on top of Kame, stretching out his arm to avoid crushing him totally. He squeaked when his hand came in contact with the hot coffee that was now covering the younger’s left arm. Jin quickly rushed to grab a napkin and dry off the liquid as much as he could. He was surprised when the boy jerked away from his reach, blushing madly.

“Isn’t that burning you?”

“I- I’m just fine, thank you.”

Jin tilted his head curiously at the boy. He was looking down, obviously trying to avoid the older’s eyes as he cleaned his jacket with a napkin. His dark brown hair fell over his forehead, hiding his face from Jin’s gaze, at least until the boy looked up at him, his expression between confused and annoyed. Jin found himself unable to look away from the boy’s beautiful face, the big dark orbs and the pouty lips. He only realized he had been staring at him when Kame coughed a little, shifting uncomfortably on his seat.

“Did you want anything?”

“Look, I’m really sorry for this mess. I just wasn’t paying attention… Let me pay you another coffee!”

Much to the younger’s surprise and further confusion, Jin pulled a chair and sat down, motioning a waiter to bring two coffees. Kame stared at him with wide eyes, but the older boy just gave him a wide smile.

“I’m Akanishi Jin, but Jin is fine, no need to be formal with me. Nice to meet you! What’s your name?”

“K- Kamenashi Kazuya. But it’s fine, you don’t need to buy me another cup…”

“Oh, never mind. They’re already here, see?”

Kame could only blink as the waiter put the two cups on the table, giving them a little bow before walking away. Jin smiled widely, pushing a cup toward Kame as he took a sip on the other one. The boy frowned immediately at the sweet taste, finding an identical displeasured expression on the younger boy when he looked at him. He took the cup from Kame’s hands, offering him the other.

“Sorry, this one is mine. I hope you don’t mind I already drank from there. We can ask the waiter to change it if you want…”

“It’s okay.”

Jin smiled, drinking again and enjoying the strong taste of his coffee, wondering why the other boy blushed so often. He guessed it was only due to shyness, and tried to engage him into an animated conversation. Little by little Kame started to loosen up, and they ended up chatting nicely until it was time for the younger to part. Jin was a little disappointed, but didn’t lose any time to ask for Kame’s phone number, much to the younger’s surprise. He promised to call, then waved goodbye to his new friend.

Of course, Jin ended up totally forgetting about the soccer match he had been late for in the first place.

Kame didn’t really know what to think about Jin. He didn’t have many friends, wasn’t really the friendlier person around. Kame was shy and introverted, and he rarely talked to people outside his family. He was too self conscious for it, he didn’t even went outside alone much. And, apparently, Jin was able to find him every time he did.

A few days after the first meeting Jin found Kame again. It was near a park, and Jin was dressed in sweatpants and a simple t-shirt, panting and sweating. He was covered in mud, some dirt even smudged on his cheek, but he didn’t seem to mind much as he smiled widely, running up to Kame.

“Hi! I have met you before, right? At the cafeteria! Your name was Kaw- Kat- Kame… Something?”

“Kamenashi Kazuya.”

“Right! Sorry, I’m terrible with names. I’m Aka-”

“-Nishi Jin, I know.”

“Whoa, you have an awesome memory! How about going for a coffee? I’m beat man, I’d cry for a seat! Come on, I promise not to throw it over you today!”

Before Kame could really object Jin had grabbed his arm and was dragging him along, chatting happily about the soccer match he had just had. Jin played soccer very often, and quite well, though “it was only his humble opinion”. He had been playing it since elementary school, though since he finished high school he had been only playing it with friends. He also played the guitar in a rock band with some friends from his school days, and was currently studying English at university. He wasn’t the best student, but he enjoyed the language a lot, and was aiming to be a teacher.

Kame was surprised Jin could talk that much, seeing Jin had told him all of that even before they arrived at the cafeteria. He ordered coffee for the both of them - two of sugar for Kame, black coffee for him - and two slices of strawberry cake Kame didn’t remember asking him for. Jin smiled at him as they waited for their order.

“Enough of me. What do you do, Kame-chan? Because I can call you Kame-chan, right?”

“S- Sure.”

“So are you studying?”

“No…”

“Working then?”

“Not really…”

Jin titled his head curiously, but seeing how uncomfortable Kame was he decided to leave the topic for the moment. For some reason he was attracted to the boy, and he didn’t want to ruin his chance for a friendship just yet. He smiled when their orders were brought, immediately grabbing his fork to start devouring his cake. Kame was slower, bringing the steamy cup to his lips first. Only when he put it back near his left arm did Jin notice the boy was wearing gloves. He frowned, the garment not being the best one to wear in summer, much less combined with a long sleeved shirt.

“Man, you must be hot! Isn’t that a little too much for summer? I mean, you’re wearing gloves even inside!”

Kame lowered his head, looking intently at his lap as he retired his arms from the table, biting his lip. Jin couldn’t help but notice how his left arm moved awkwardly.

“Are you hurt?”

“W- What?”

“Your arm.” Jin motioned to it with his head, smiling softly. “Is it hurt?”

Kame closed his eyes with a hurt expression that lasted only a second. He enclosed his hand around his left arm in a protective gesture before giving Jin a unsure smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“It’s an old injury, don’t worry.”

“How did you get it?”

“It’s a long story. I wouldn’t like to bore you with it.”

This time it was clear Kame was uncomfortable and didn’t want to talk about the topic. Jin was curious, but he decided not to push the boy further. He grinned cheerfully and started chatting away again, trying to distract Kame. Even though the boy seemed to relax a little, he was still tense when they left the cafeteria. Jin had paid for everything despite the younger’s protests, but he was reluctant of letting go of Kame so soon.

“Where do you live?”

“…Down the street… Why?”

“I have nothing to do right now, so what about I walk you home? Come on!”

Kame blinked, but he was left with no option expect following Jin between amused and confused. Again Jin did most of the talking, and he would have walked past Kame’s house hadn’t it been for the younger stopping him. Jin looked at the apartaments building, feeling kind of sad they had already arrived. He stood there awkwardly, scratching the back of his head and looking for a excuse to be there a little longer.

“Uh… You said you had an injury in your arm, right? Does it still hurt?”

Jin stretched out his hand, landing his fingertips in the younger’s left arm lightly. However, the contact was enough to make Kame jerk away with a panicked cry. Jin pulled his hand back immediately, staring at Kame with wide surprised eyes. The younger boy was looking down, tears shinning in his eyes as he bit his lip strongly, hugging his arm to himself.

“K- Kame? Did I hurt you? I’m sorry, I didn’t kno -”

“I- I’m fine. I just n- need to go now. Bye.”

Before Jin could do anything about it Kame had dashed inside the building, closing the door behind him. He rushed upstairs, not daring to wait for the elevator knowing Jin was still staring at him from the outside. He slammed his apartment’s door behind him, glad for once that his mother was not there, for he did not want to explain the reason of his tears.

Kame closed the room of his bedroom, the sobs shaking his shoulders widly by now. He fell to the ground on his knees, his head hanging low as tears slided down his cheeks. His face was scrunched up in pain and sorrow, and it was getting difficult to breath, but he still couldn’t calm down. Before thinking what was he doing, he took off his gloves with his teeth and ripped his shirt off his body, raising his head and staring at his reflection in the full body mirror through the blur of his tears.

At his left side, his prosthetic arm was ugly and heavy, dirtying the image of his body.

Jin didn’t contact Kame after the incident, and though the younger boy couldn’t quite understand why, that fact made him sad. He wasn’t one to get close to people quickly, and he had barely met Jin a couple of times, but he was already missing him. He spent hours thinking about him, about how cheerful and nice he had been with him. He thought about calling him, but maybe Jin wouldn’t want to meet him again after his rash reaction last time… Kame was too afraid to check if his only chance for a friendship in the last year was really gone.

Kame was not the most optimistic person around, and maybe that was the reason why he was truly surprised when after a few weeks of not knowing about Jin, the older boy called him out of the blue. Jin sounded nervous through his phone, and even more so when Kame’s mother dropped him where they had agreed to meet.

Jin walked up to Kame and waved at him, offering a nervous smile as he shifted uneasily. As soon as the woman’s car was out of sight he bowed deeply at the younger boy.

“Look, I’m sorry for the other day. I didn’t want to hurt you, if I had known… I promise not to do it again.”

“It’s okay.”

“So, uhm… Do you want to do something?”

“Anything will be fine with me.”

Jin pouted. “Kame-chan~ We’re going nowhere if you are like that! Come on, there must be something you want to do!”

“Then… Wh- What about a walk?”

Jin smiled widely, immediately starting off toward a nearby park. He refused to talk about himself and asked questions about Kame, that the younger answered doubtfully. He explained that he used to study law at college before he got his injury, but again refused to explain what kind of injury it was or how did he get it. Jin let it be, smiling and asking about Kame’s hobbies, though the boy didn’t seem to have many. He didn’t like to go out much, nor was he good doing handwork. He said he liked to read, though, and sometimes he even tried to write, though he admitted not being really good at it.

Jin listened carefully to all Kame said, nodding every now and them. At some point they had sat down on the grass, tired of walking aimlessly. Kame was beside him, his arm resting awkwardly on his lap as he talked, only moving his right limb. He was talking more or less freely, though he still didn’t dare to look Jin in the eye, despite the older’s obvious staring.

The afternoon passed quicker than Jin would have liked, and soon it was getting colder. Jin helped Kame stand up and they started off toward the younger’s house, since Kame admitted he didn’t like taking trains very much. Again the walk seemed to last less than a moment, and soon Jin was standing with Kame in front of the other’s building. He bided him good night, and was about to walk away when Kame called timidly for him.

“T- Thank you for calling today… After what happened I… I thought you weren’t going to show up again…” Jin smiled softly, not knowing what to say. “Can I… Ask why did you call?”

Jin shifted uneasily. “I… Don’t know. I have barely get to know you yet I already feel attracted to you. Just like a friend, I mean, don’t get me in the bad sense! I want to get to know you better, even though I can’t really understand why you look so interesting to me…”

Kame gave Jin a little smile, nodding. He was happier than he had been in what felt forever, and it was easy to ignore the little churn of his stomach every time he thought of the secret he was keeping from Jin when he remembered the boy’s smile.
