I watched the DTV adaption of All-Star Superman. HERE'S WHAT I THOUGHT!

-They did a much better job of adapting Quitely's style (or at least, as good a job as could be done on a DTV budget) than they have with McGuiness or (ugh) Mike Turner's style

-The performances were...not really great as a whole. Some, like the inimitable Ed Asner as Perry White and a delightfully pompous Anthony LaPaglia as Lex Luthor, were great. Others not so much--Lois Lane sounded really flat most of the time, especially compared to the MAGNIFICENT SPLENDOR of the lovely Dana Delaney, and that guy who was Jimmy Olsen just straight up sounded fucked up and out of place. Superman himself was...okay. Not as good as the best guys in the cast, but not as bad as the worst. Kind of a dropped ball, though, considering this is one of the strongest Superman stories ever written

-Speaking of the writing, the adaption was...okay. A bit uneven. They left out the parts that were most disposable, but because this story was framed so perfectly in comic form it ended up feeling real lopsided with so many big chunks missing, regardless of how important they were to the ongoing, overarching story.

All in all, it was kinda...okay. Much like the guy who played Superman, it was better than the worst DTV DC movies (The SuperBat movies) but not as good as the best (Wonder Woman, Crisis on Two Earths). It's worth noting that the adaptations are always kind of crappy. Doing a straight 1:1 version of a comic story has never really been...like, DONE before in American animation, I think, and they wanna do it in this DTV movie format where they're presumably limited to a running time of 120 minutes or less, they might want to reconsider how direct they want to be in their approach.
