When Shinji Mikami's project with Platinum games, Vanquish, was announced, I was skeptical. It looked like someone took a Halo SPARTAN and had him redecorated at an Apple Store. But I held out hope, because hey, Mikami!
When the first gameplay footage of Vanquish hit, I perked up a bit. Look at all them missles! That's some macross shit. Oh man look at him zoom around! Oh boy, what fun!
When the demo for Vanquish came out, I was HOOKED. Deep. The way the game gradually unveiled it's secrets to me as I continued to play it was like learning your partners most quivering erogenous zones~ The boss at the end of the demo was also really impressive! A big spider-tank that turns into a big robot with all kinds of death rays! Most robots have one death ray, but this guy had like, three! Plus cannons! Plus all kindsa pod missles! Whoopin on him was a treat. It was a delightful throwback to ancient days of arcade style gameplay ("Find the enemy pattern! Shoot the glowing red weakpoint!") without being quite as for babies as so many modern games are, because they're the bastard offpsring of PC games and arcade games.
A new Vanquish demo came out earlier today.
It consisted of a "Challenge Stage", sorta like Devil May Cry's bloody palace or those horde-type modes you see in so many shooters.
Holy shit
They got this one gun that shoots a giant explosive buzzsaw that's great for blowing off giant enemies limbs (regular-sized enemies just get killed by it)
Which is handy, when you've got enemies who are wielding double gatling guns, flame throwers and giant spiked bats from hell, automatic guns that are firing the kind of ordinance that would make a tank shit its pants, crazy ass plasma beams so fast that if you so much as pop your head out over cover to say "Hello!" you'll get blown all to hell.
Good thing you got all kinds of fucked up sick moves and homing lasers and rocket booster skates and buzzsaw melee attacks that are like the chainsaw bayonet move from Gears of War only way beter to deal with it.
This game...ahhh this game. If all shooters were like this, maybe I'd be a bigger fan of the genre them. As it is, I'm retty sure Bayonetta and Vanquish will be my #1 and #2 as far as GOTY goes. Which one will be first? That remains to be seen~
