this book took the better part of a month to complete. part of it was timing. june and july have been especially busy for me in my day job, but the other part of it was putting it off because of the sheer amount of work that needed to be done. it started with my girl friend telling a friend's mother about my books. her daughter was getting married (is now) and they wanted a guest book. so i accepted the commission to get it done. i quickly had something in mind, but i also quickly knew that i would most likely be lettering it by hand. and that is unnerving because i'm at best an intermediate calligrapher. my letter spacing is a little off and my lines are rarely uniform. still i took the job and getting down to the wire (finishing the day before it was due) i put the book together.
all in all i was very happy with the design. this one was completely from concept as i had never made a book this size and shape before. the pages were custom size as well. i ended up spending more than i made from this, mostly on tools. its funny how i started with more modern tools like a eyelet punch and setter and now i'm working with a hammer and a set rather than use the punch tool that cost me twice as much. i personally feel the finished product is much better.
after the book was finished came the long and stressful task of lettering. here is a sample of my work ... all in all it came out nicely. but if i'm honest with myself i think i could have one better.
