#689 Independent VS Mutually Exclusive

Jul 15, 2010 14:20

Anyone who has taken Mathematics in his or her lifetime would have came across the terms "Independent" and "Mutually Exclusive"  in topics such as sets and probability. (Erm, JC students, if you have came across the terms in other topics, would you mind leaving a comment and tell me which are the ones? Thanks in advance!)

The terms were mentioned for the second time in my polytechnic life in Business Finance.
The first took place during the Business Statistics Class in Year 1 Semester 2.

This week, our topic is Capital Budgeting.
Here, I would like to apologize to Business students who had to search high and low for seats because some A&F students crashed in to your lecture slot. /i felt so guilty. But that girl who was a seat away from my right should be even more ashamed of herself. That seat is for human, not your pink bag. It's almost full house.

Lecturer Michael Tan started the lecture by saying that one of his friends was dating a girl from the finance sector. And one day, the girl posed a question to the guy, leaving him so clueless that he had to seek Michael's help.

Girl: "Is our relationship mutually exclusive or independent?"
Guy: "Can you spare me 5 minutes?"
(And off he went to ring Michael up.)

Guy: "Hello. Michael, blah blah blah (updating him on the current situation). How should I answer??"
Michael: "Blah blah blah (explaining to him on what the terms meant). I suggest that you tell her that our relationship is currently mutually exclusive, but I hope it will turn out to be an independent one."

For those who don't understand this story,
a mutually exclusive relationship means that the guy is dating quite a number of girls (he needs time to think and make a decision) and
a independent relationship means that it is only one-to-one.

Michael Tan has some warnings though.
If that girl is really a grab, you better make up your mind fast and answer independent.
If not, the answer above would be a good one.
If you answer independent, you can't get jealous when your girl dates other guys. It's unfair if you can have a few girls and she doesn't have any guys for company.

After that story, he kept reminding the guys in the LT to answer the politically correct one when faced with such a question and for girls to pose this question to their boyfriends via sms during lecture. That put me off from messaging during lecture while the it was still going on.

When the lecture was coming to an end, Michael Tan gave out evaluation forms for us to fill up and submit.
For the open-ended question, "Suggest something that might be of benefit...",
Michael shared a joke with us.
There was once when a person filled this words in,
"Can you please speak slower and end faster?"

I reckon Michael should complete one evaluation form and pass it to the person with the comment that says,
"Can you don't contradict yourself?"
But the above couldn't be done since students do not write names on it due to confidentiality reasons.
