The Weird Al concert was last night.
Oh. My. GOD.
The entire thing was a glorious array of nerdity on display -- the audience was letting their Weird flag fly. I saw at least one shirt stating "Hey, that snorkel's been just like a snorkel to me!", so we knew that we were among peers.
And then the show started. We were barely ten feet from the stage. It started with a polka medley -- the only downside was that the only song I recognized in it was
Brooklyn Rage Poker Face, which means that I am OLD.
Nonetheless. We heard a bunch of new material (including Maggie's unofficial theme song, "
Skipper Dan"), and so much classic stuff. He played "Another One Rides the Bus", for God's sake! And a number of costume changes for specific songs -- the Nirvana outfit for "Smells Like Nirvana", and "DARE TO BE STUPID" in the Devo suits!
The best part, though, was the fact that the entire audience was singing along the whole time. Nerd unity, people!
Well, that or when he launched into "I Wanna Be Ur Lover" in a red tiger-striped suit, came down into the audience, and sang to my wife, directly, that his love for her "was like diarrhea -- [he] just couldn't hold it in." Yes, Weird Al pseudo-serenaded my wife, and was but a few inches from me. And I am totally all right with this. ~_^
And for an encore, he came back out in Jedi costume with a legion of local Star Wars cosplayers, and sang both "The Saga Begins" and "Yoda".
All in all, it was an awesome night, and one helluva birthday present. And any other concert I see from now one will have a nearly insurmountable task in trying to surpass this show. Except for Weird Al -- because, man, we're definitely going to be there the next time he tours.
