Gifts and birth days

I'm having a horrific time trying to figure out what to give Jessica for her birthday. She has nothing but would want nothing I can possibly give her. I keep trying to fashion some sort of jewelry for her, but I know I can never create anything she would like.

I still so clearly remember her birth, and it's been 25 years ago. They would induce labor if I hadn't given birth by Friday. So my parents started their trek from Nampa (just outside Boise), Idaho to Seattle Thursday morning. Contractions started around 5 p.m. on Thursday. They were intense in no time, but my sister and I decided we couldn't go to the hospital without my parents having arrived. By 7 p.m., when my parents did arrive, I was having serious and consistent pains. My mother freaked out. Get to the hospital!

I was young at the time (21). I knew nothing. (Not that I know anything more now.) I didn't think to question my doctor on his beliefs regarding births. I was referred to him and that was that. As it turned out, doc believed in totally natural births, no matter how oversized the baby or how painful it was for the mother.

My mom sat in the room with me. I had read up on labor and had prepared a "ready kit" for the day. A washcloth and sour balls are all I remember having included. Through the earlier hours of the night, Mom kept trying to offer me the wetted washcloth and sour balls. I went into a rage with each offer. Late in the night or early the next morning, Mom had the audacity to fall asleep in the chair. How dare she fall asleep when I had to suffer through contractions. I was royally unhappy and started pitching the sour balls at her. I was yelling, "I am going home! Take this thing [a strap that measured baby's heart rate] off of me! I am going home!"

To be continued .... (I've got to get back to trying to fashion a piece of jewelry that she will never wear.)

memoir bits, jessica
