Maybe because he's a little scared? Kids are like that, when they think their parents are angry at them they hide. As adults, we need to be patient with them and assure them that we are mad at them, but we don't mean to harm them.

Unless y'know you make him angry. 8(

I don't know if I'd agree with that. By the sounds of earlier, if I were the kid I'd be scared shit-less. Why not just reason through the door?

Not to be mean to the kid, but I bet just a few soft words would sway him to open the door. Then you can talk to him without the trouble.
