Last night, when CNN declared Obama to be our next president, I was up on Pike Street. Suddenly people from Neumos and people from The Comet across the street just flowed out of the doors of those bars. Someone was beating a hand drum. People started dancing to the beat. It is a rather amazing time. With the condition that things are in, this young man is going to have his hands more than full.

The pundits are already yammering about the team that he's put together to form the government. So why, I ask, does it matter if he's picking folks who have served under others? That doesn't mean there won't be change, it just means that experience matters in these difficult times.

I'm enjoying the "hope" ride.

After working full time for weeks motivating people to participate in this election, I was taking a well needed break to restock my groceries as the victor was announced. This organizer stood silently grinning through her tears as immigrants and people of color, strangers all, in the off-price grocery store, smiling, spoke excitedly on cell phones and gave each other thumbs up signs. The air electric with organic collectivism, every whispering mouth made the same shape; the shape of surprise, of joy, of hope, of Obama.
I did not hug anyone, yet when they saw my tears, they hugged me with their eyes, and in that moment we were all the same. Innocent again in our shared vision of a better future.
I was too young to remember the last time we named a hero and chose him to lead us. May god bless our new leader and keep him safe and accountable to those that named and chose him.

I too heard with bated breath the announcement that Obama had succeeded in his bid to the White House...and can only hope for the first glimmer of change. Bring it on, I'm ready.
