Thank god Riza could cook. Because they probably would have starved by now.
Winry frequently wondered how they’d survived prior to Riza’s coming to stay with them. She vaguely recalled Scieszka cooking meals that Winry refused to eat. Scieszka had a habit of “experimenting”. Which Winry translated as tossing random ingredients into a pot.
Technically, that was what Riza did as well. But Winry figured that at some point in time someone had taught Riza what ingredients went well together.
When asked, Riza would smile and say something about Colonel Hughes. It was better not to inquire any further.
At first, Scieszka had been responsible for the cooking. Which meant they’d gone hungry.
They’d done better once Winry figured out that the smoke detector wasn’t a timer.
Then Riza had taken over. It had been an amazing transformation. She made cakes that tasted like cake and not charcoal. And she got them to eat things they would never have tried before. Mostly by calling it by some foreign name and refusing to tell them what was in it until after they had eaten it.
It took awhile for them to decide they’d rather have mysterious dishes they couldn’t pronounce but could eat than mysterious dishes they could pronounce but couldn’t eat.

Scieszka was staring at her, looking terrified. Winry couldn’t meet her eyes. She kept staring at Riza instead.
This was truly the stupidest fight she’d ever been involved in. Winry wasn’t even sure what they had started arguing about. All she knew was that somehow The Colonel and Ed had gotten drug into the argument and now Scieszka was crying and Riza was looking at Winry like she wanted to slap her.
She wanted to know what it was that kept Riza around. What the Hell it was that kept her and Scieszka from making Riza leave.
Scieszka said it was love. Winry had been startled the first time she’d said it. It had felt like someone had punched her in the stomach.
Winry had never thought of love when Riza became involved. And she’d turned it over in her mind a thousand times since Scieszka had said it.
She didn’t think that was it. Certainly not for Riza. Winry knew how Riza behaved when in love with someone - people in Central City talked, especially when they thought no one was listening. And Winry couldn’t imagine Riza killing anyone to “protect” her and Scieszka.
And Winry certainly didn’t think it was love she felt when she thought of Riza. She knew what love felt like. And it wasn’t that terrifying, helpless feeling that came over her when Riza was around.
She didn’t know what it was and she was too afraid to ask Scieszka what she felt.
All Winry knew was that love was supposed to make you feel safe and supported.
With Riza, she felt like she was drowning.

“I think we’re being punished,” Winry said after a moment.
Riza thought that was a bit extreme. She shook her head. “It wouldn’t be so bad if one of you would pay attention to the date when a bill comes in. You’re supposed to pay them before they threaten to shut off the utilities.” She walked out of the room with Black Hayate on her heels.
Scieszka and Winry stared at each other for a moment.
WHAT?
***
Scieskza figured Riza had only caught part of her and Winry’s conversation.
Because it honestly didn’t make sense any other way.
“She probably only heard the part about payment,” Winry said as the front door closed and Black Hayate barked, signaling that Riza was home for the night.
“Obviously,” Scieszka said, sitting down on the bed next to her.
Clearly Riza hadn’t heard the part about Equivalent Trade or the discussion of trading every happy moment for a painful one. That Winry believed that in gaining Scieszka she’d lost Ed and that it meant something that Riza had come to stay with them days before Al disappeared.
She certainly hadn’t heard Scieszka comment that it had taken both her and Winry to “pay” for the Colonel.
After a moment, Scieszka said:
“What did I lose?”
Winry didn’t know what to say and so she was terribly grateful when Hayate jumped onto the bed with them.
Riza stood in the doorway and stared at them.
“What?” she said, after a moment.
Winry and Scieszka looked at each other, then looked back at Riza.
“Nothing.”
