Poll Results

Mar 06, 2007 00:56

A couple of you asked me to post the poll results. I wish I could just change the options and let you read what people said without me going through all this hassle, but maybe it's best this way so nobody gets attacked personally. Feel free to attack what individuals have said anonymously, though >:). Only 14 of you took the poll. It's still open, so read down a few entries and answer it if you want to.

Why are we at war in Iraq?

-- To remove a threatening regime, and all its remnants.
-- A combination of ethnocentrism (nat'l ego) and a political philosophy and accompanying rhetoric that understated the difficulty of state building. Oh, and economic interests help too. (Oil)
-- Economic incentives, to gain a stragetic foothold in the Middle East, and to reinforce what the Bush administration considers America's mandate to serve as world police.
-- to limit terrorist nations, free its peoples, and have a stronghold in the volitle middle east
-- Oil
-- To eliminate Sadam and establish a free and functioning government.
-- It depends on when ask the Bush Administration as to what the answer would be, but unfortunately, I do not believe enough information has been released for the public to really know.
-- War for oil
-- Because we started it, and did not have the patience to resolve the conflict with non violent means
-- WMD's
-- We are never at war for reasons as simple as we believe. On the other hand, we are not a nation of revenge-seekers, of infidel-haters, or of impulsive war-mongerers. So, I don't know any more.
-- because G.W. Bush wanted to avenge his father
-- Because America has a vested interest in waring with Iraq...and terrorism was a good excuse to get the people of the USA behind the effort.
-- Because it was in the best economic interest of America in terms of oil control, violations of UN laws

Is this war justified? Why/why not?

-- It is justified because we gave Saddam repeated chances to comply with UN regulations in regards to WMDs, but he refused.
-- On the moral and political levels, no. On the economic level? Well apart from following the WWII economic fallacy (that a war helps the economy) , it might be. It depends on how things turn out. (Oil)
-- No. Morally- because the cost in human lives is NEVER justified. Politically- because the reasons for fighting weren't honestly disclosed and the administration wrongly capitalized on post-911 fear.
-- Yes, because Sadaam Hussein was an evil, EVIL mass murderer
-- No, at least not for the reasons that are claimed.
-- Yes. We had evidence to justify invasion. Hussein violated 19 UN sanctions. If we don't stay till the end, than the new government will fall.
-- I cannot know without knowing why we went to war. Was Hussein a terrible leader, yes. Are we justified in war, I don't know.
-- Not justified because there was no actual or credible perception of a threat
-- Well, the gov'ts justifications were the wmd's, which didn't exist, and to get out saddaam, who we killed, so now we're only here to clean up the mess we started, so no. Violence is always wrong
-- No, where are the WMDs.
-- War is a symptom of our fallen world, so I think that, if we are in a just war, it's justified. But I don't know if we are.
-- No, there are no WMDs and Bin Laden hated Hussain anyway. Sure, you can say that we freed the Iraqis from Hussein but why aren't we freeing the Sudanese who seem to be in more danger?
-- I don't think so. If America (as in, the government) were truly just, there wouldn't be the same tendency to ignore issues which are just as concerning in other sectors of the world. e.g.India & China
-- No. Iraq posed no immediate threat to the USA.

Were there/are there WMD's in Iraq?

Yes: 3
No: 8
I don't know: 1
Maybe: 2

Was Hussein connected/responsible in any way for the 9/11 attacks? If yes, how so? Is Hussein connected with Osama bin Laden?

-- Yes; he assisted Al Qaida and terrorist groups.
-- No, and No.
-- No. No one has proved that he had any dealings with Al Qaeda. To the previous question, I would like to add that America GAVE Hussein weapons at one time.
-- If Hussein could have done 9/11 and gotten away with it, he would have.
-- Not that I am sure of.
-- It was at first believed he was. But that allegation has been cleared.
-- He was not connected to the 9/11 attacks or with Osama bin Laden.
-- No
-- No
-- No. Yes
-- I don't know. Hussein probably harbored terrorists, but I don't know if he helped bin Laden.
-- No, the 9/11 attacks were done by Saudis, Afganis and Morrocans. Bin Laden hated Hussein and never would have helped him.
-- I don't know but I suspect not. Evil guys will be evil.
-- No, even President Bush said that he wasn't; No, Osama and Saddam were bitter enemies.

It's interesting how even people with very similar political views had pretty different answers. Have fun, crazy kids!
