MBC reflections and an epic love story
my thoughts on the MBC festival that i saw:
1. wtf was 2pm wearing? like, srsly, just when i thought that song couldn't get any more ridiculous with the running man dance, they proved me wrong.
2. maybe i should start watching WGM for khuntoria.
3. i screamed incoherently when sungmin was sitting on the throney thing. srsly. i did a quick count and was like, okay, who's missing? then i was all excited when wook came down the staircase and i was just hoping that min would also get to come down a staircase. but noooo. he was sprawled on that bench looking like sex. sex with eyeliner on. sexliner. it was over all too soon.
4. i was a little sad that there was no teukchul moment at '드디어미칠거야,' but if i had to trade that for sexsungmin, i am perfectly willing.
and now, an epic suju love story:
i remember circa march 2009 lying on bumjo's bed talking about this 'sorry sorry' song and its ridiculous(ly catchy) dance. tim had been singing 'pajama party' in noraebang for a year and a half at that point, but i had bull-headedly refused to embrace a group with 13 members, a fact which i will perpetually regret, i suspect, at least until i have something more dramatic to regret. all i really knew about them was that they had a chinese member, a fat member, and several effeminate members. but not even 'sorry sorry' was enough. i still didn't fall for them--no, it took floppy-hair-cardigan-kyuhyun from 'it's you' to seal the deal.
i don't know what it was, really. the planets aligned. i was feeling melancholy at the prospect of leaving korea in a few months, yesung was wearing a pink polo, i don't know. but i distinctly remember curling up in that bright purple comforter - it took me a whole hour to be able to distinguish them in 'it's you.'
now, for old times, thirteen thoughts as i'm rewatching 'it's you' drama version:
1. lol, kibum, that headband and munch scream face/smirk is ridiculous. fitting that this is the first song i fell for, considering that kibum appears for 2 seconds then disappears for most of the rest of the video, which is basically what my fan experience of him was. i could've loved him too, i think, from what i saw in old TV shows, but he and i were like ships passing in the night.
2. ahahah where the hell did teuk's sleeve go? i love that man.
3. i had a lot of confusion with kyuhyun and donghae, because of shared grey v-neck, i'm guessing.
4. forgive me, ryeowook, i thought you had a rat-face in this video, and now you're in my top four. MY BAD.
5. this video is so siwon/hangeng. couple trenchcoats yelling at each other on the phone.
6. awwwww... sungmin's hair flip was the best thing ever. his hammer pants, not so much. i also loved him because he had the slashiest line in the song: "even though i know our love is wrong, i can't give up, i can't ever let you go."
7. why god, why did they not include donghae's little stop/lick/slide in the actual music video. so hot.
8. i still want to know what yesung and eunhyuk were doing in that alley. maybe just trying to escape from this unnecessarily crowded street corner! WTF?
9. lol, q, stop unbuttoning and rebuttoning your jacket. just take it off. also, eunhyuk, did you srsly just tag that wall and then lean on it immediately? are you dumb?
10. heechul, why so precious with your lumberjacket and one big note?
11. siwon, why so angry at phone? also, donghae, why do you whisper 왜모르니왜모르니 at heechul like a creeper?
12. where would this song be without KRY's belting at the end?
13. god, i listen to this song fairly regularly, but i always forget what the video does to me. i wish i could freeze them here, in this moment, before things went wrong. they all looked very comfortable in their stylish outerwear.
so after like an hour of pausing and scrutinizing various promotional pictures on google images, i was finally able to tell them apart mostly. until i watched the next video, in which all of their looks had changed and i was like, arghfml. but i did not give up, i persevered. i committed in a way i had never been able to before to kpop. the 'sorry sorry' video especially fucked with me, because there were always three people in the shot and each one lasted like 4 seconds.
then any hopes of a productive weekend went out the window, and i spent literally the next eight hours watching youtube videos. tim came over to meet me for dinner and i was still holed up in my cave in the darkness.
and that's how it's been. i still go through phases every few months where i'm like: you know what would be awesome? my ass getting numb from spending so long watching suju videos, because it seems they are neverending.
a few highlights:
1. EHB, the awkward episode with the underwater molestation which made hyukmin my first pairing. they were just adorable. (sad, i just went looking for this on YT and now i can't find it.)
2. the only other EHB episode i watched, with the tears. and srsly i love this episode because heechul is so amazing, throwing his chopsticks at kangin and then tearing out of the room because he can't keep a straight face. but my heart was broken by kyuhyun's tearful outburst, which i still question. presumably he knew what was going on? was he really just faking? because damn, he's good.
3. star golden bell, star king, heechul being spastic. obnoxiously slashy mini-dramas.
4. the joy of kyumin on intimate note, then the heartbreak of kyueveryone on intimate note. that loveable whore.
5. all those amazing sj-m shows! q: 'do you even have to ask?' announcer: 'where did you learn that? hangeng!' that ridiculous telephone game they played with dancing that had q crawling on the floor?
what can i say? they just make me so happy. all of them. i'm reminiscing, forgive me. :D
