Ricky Martin and Natalie Portman are in early talks to do the mambo together in a sequel to the worldwide hit "Dirty Dancing," according to Daily Variety.
Artisan Entertainment, the company behind "The Blair Witch Project," has teamed up with Miramax Films to update the 1987 smash. The film companies are looking at a $20 million-$25 million budget for "Dirty Dancing 2," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

No deals have been signed yet with any talent.

They plan to shift gears with the plot, setting it in Miami's South Beach with a contemporary Latin twist. The sequel will center on a hotel owner in the original film who now owns a nightclub in South Beach, where he lives with his grandson. The original picture concerned a teenager's coming of age at a Catskills resort in 1963.

According to the Reporter, sources said Patrick Swayze, who starred in the original "Dirty Dancing" with Jennifer Grey, may take a cameo.

"Dirty Dancing" grossed $63 million at the domestic box office, while the soundtrack sold more than 20 million units worldwide. Plans for a sequel surfaced in 1996, when Artisan predecessor Live Entertainment reportedly offered Swayze $5 million to reprise his role.

Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein reportedly embraced the notion over a lunch with Artisan co-CEO Amir Malin in December.

"'Dirty Dancing' is a cultural touchstone and phenomenal property," Weinstein told Daily Variety. "I am personally looking forward to working with Amir and Artisan on this exciting project."

Artisan and Miramax will co-finance and co-produce the picture, with Artisan handling domestic distribution and Miramax's Disney-owned sister company Buena Vista International taking foreign rights.
