stupid wizard tricks: spells and specialties.

Sep 21, 2007 10:33

Nita, by grace of some article of main character-dom has one of the largest numbers/portfolios of specialties, areas of concentration applying to wizardry. This can be any number of things: linguistics, spell creation, affinity, sensitivity...basically, I see it kind of like college? You can have a straight engineering major or you can have an incredibly complex theoretical degree. Nita's...is like, cellular bio major, linguistics and English minor? In case you hadn't noticed, they're all gigantic workoholics. And she's not the most powerful wizard of her generation, either. That would be her little sister.

There are some common points for all wizards, of course. Every wizard can talk in the Speech, use world gates or other transportation wizardry, create light, and access the information and energy of wizardry in some form like the manual or the Air or Spot, which, as of book 8, Duane has defined as Peridaxis. But every common spell has a variation, and every spell is modifiable, and so each wizard, in the end, has a highly personalized approach to what they do.

s p e c i a l t i e s:
- biological organisms
- fixing things, biological or otherwise
- astronomy (including identification of non-human species)
- kernels
- lucid dreaming
- linguistics of the Speech
- (emerging) prophecy

t r i c k s:
- look directly at the Sun and use it to tell what time it is
- be able to hear the background radiation (and its partial sentience) on the moon
- wizardly version of psychometry and looking: works better for her with living objects and not overlays or "passengers"
- likes complex, define everything structures (much like some programmers.)
- can track Dari and presumably any person she knows well across galaxies. multiple and many.

Lists to be completed when I finish with my notes.
