Well, it's official. My pancreas is on strike. After a trip to the ER on Wednesday with a blood sugar reading of 502, my doctor informed me today that my pancreas is no longer producing insulin.
When I was first diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic my body created insulin, but didn't know how to use it right. I've been able to keep it under partial control with oral medications until recently. Now I am taking a slow acting insulin shot every morning and dosages of a fast acting insulin after each meal. Fun stuff, let me tell ya.
So now my family is up in arms, mad at me for not taking better care of myself. They're also voicing strong opposition to me going on my camping trip this weekend. I assured them that with the insulin my blood sugar wouldn't get as high as it did a couple of days ago, and it's been too soon for me to worry about it being too low. I'll just have to be careful and make sure I test often.
I AM going on this trip. I NEED this trip.
