Robin held the handrail and looked out across the stormy sea. She had been on the ship for two weeks now and the memories were still constant. They crowded her, filled her every moment and thought… when would they finally fade?
Her knuckles were white as she gripped harder, the cold sunk into her bones and the wind was so bitter it hurt. The pain was reassuring somehow, if she was here suffering at least it was her choice.
She looked out into the heaving seas, sometimes she caught a glimpse of a fish or some seaweed but mostly it was just the restless waves. Deep under, they hid the remnants of so many who had thought they could conquer this new world. So many secrets hidden that would never see light again. She felt as if her own life had begun deep under the black waters. Maybe she would see the sun now… or sink again and forever be lost and forgotten beneath the waves…
“Robin-chan?”
Nami’s voice. The navigator, redhead, the only other woman. Robin had not been able to assess her. She was proud yet humble, she watched the world when no one watched her.
“Robin? It’s cold out here.”
An observation. Not a reason to interrupt.
Robin waited silently.
“Why are you here?”
An almost imperceptible shrug.
“Do you miss them?”
A gentle shake of the head. No.
“I brought something for you.”
Robin turned slowly. Nami stood slightly back, the wind whipping her red tresses back the forth. She held out a red rose, slowly loosing its petals to the storm.
Robin’s brow creased, baffled.
“I’ve heard that the flower that blooms in adversity is the most beautiful,” Nami held the rose forward, encouraging Robin to take it. Their fingers brushed briefly and Nami smiled.
