Quick Note before reading: Kasutera is a Japanese sponge cake that is typically yellowish-brown and sometimes served with cheese-cream frosting on top or in-between layers.

Luffy had a dog once.

The moment the ratty Sheltie had climbed out of the garbage dump outside Gray Terminal and starting following them home, Ace had insisted, voice gaining volume and panic the wider Luffy’s smile spread, that it was only another mouth to feed.

And it would go everywhere!

…And it was probably sick!

And-And when it died Luffy would cry like a baby!

Undeterred, the younger wrapped his tiny arms around the mongrel with bold claims of taming it. His brother sighed like he had lost his words.

Twenty-one days later, they stood over a plot of newly dug dirt, an overturned bowl it’s marker. And-

Ace looked up at their tree base. “How are we going to get the mutt up there?”

“I know, I’ll hold him! Come here Kasutera!”

A rubbery arm stretched out wrapping around the puppy that was twenty feet away.

“Luffy, WAIT!”

The warning came too late.

His arm retracted.

Craaaa~ck.

-Luffy was crying.

“I-I just wanted to hold him.” He sniveled out.

Because Ace was Ace, he knew the right words to say. “I’ll show you how.”

And from that moment until his last, he did.

Many years later, eight members of the Straw Hat pirate crew, particularly the green-haired swordsman, all had their own anecdotes about being tugged, yanked, jerked, flipped, and - furthermore - thrown every which way by their eccentric captain’s rubber powers. Sometimes these tales were funny, other times they sounded downright violent.

Despite that, not one of them could recall ever gaining even a single bruise.

Because Luffy was Luffy, his reply to how that was possible was, “’Cause I don’t bruise.”

If only Ace were there, he could have said it right:

“Because holding someone is a promise to take their pain instead.”
