A/N: I had such trouble with this prompt; everything I kept thinking up was too fancy for 300 words. But in the end the challenge was great, because I'm proud of the result. I decided to write a fable for you all!

Legend has it that there was once a lion named Sunny who ruled the forgotten forest as a king would an empire. One day, as he was licking his chops after a filling meal, a tiny voice he did hear:

“Help!”

It was Merry, the lamb. Usually, she would avoid the king for reasons obvious, but seeing the bones that foretold a meal recently consumed, she dared approach.

“The leopard is chasing me! I ask you to save me!”

“Why should I save you? If I were to save all prey, even I would go hungry.”

“If you do,” Merry said, “I will be certain to repay you.”

Sunny laughed mockingly. “Whatever could a lamb do for a lion?”

She calmly retorted, “There is power even in one.”

Intrigued, Sunny chased off the leopard.

From that day, Merry stayed near but the lamb could do little a lion could. Without claws, she could not climb. Without long legs, she could neither run fast nor chase prey. And without whiskers, she often got stuck.

And yet, her hooves were nice for scratching those unreachable places. Her wooly coat was a soft pillow or a nice blanket on cold nights. And her natural diet found many plants good for quelling an upset stomach.

Years passed on and Sunny grew old. A new king came and usurped him. His once grand position became nothing more than a joke. His former subjects now laughed and jeered at him when he shuffled by.

But when the graying beast lay down in his bed at night, a lamb always certainly joined him.

“I understand.” He said on her dying day, at her side as she had always been for him. “It takes only one to be there for another.”
