The Willow Tree

♪♫ I met Willa by the willow tree. ♪♫ I left her with a promise to return...♫♪♫

Sniff. Or I would if I had a nose.

~~~
Knock-knock.
             A scowling girl stood under the willow tree by my door as the sun shone overhead. “Dad told me to bring you onigiri,” she plunked her basket on the table. “Why would you join pirates?!”
             “Thank you, young lady. Would you go on a date with me?”
             “What?! No!” she exclaimed and stormed out of my cottage.
             Seconds later she shrieked.
             “C’mon, let’sh have shome fun, girlie,” said the officer backing her against the willow tree.
             “Hey, Officer-san, that’s no way to treat a lady!”
             The second officer drew his sword, “Like a pirate would know how t’ treat women.”
             “You have to ask, ‘Would you please spend the day with me?’ and play some music,” I said, playing Black Handkerchief of Happiness on my fiddle.
             “What?! Aren’t you supposed to help?!” she screamed, not understanding me or their daze.
             “Huh?!"
             The two rose from their trance and surrounded me, “Can’t fight, eh?”
             The girl ran from under the willow tree.
~~~

Knock-knock.

It was the young lady again, standing next to the willow tree. “Thanks...even though you didn’t do much,” she said reluctantly and turned to hurry away.

“You’re welcome. You’re Jonah’s girl--Willa-san, right? I protect whatever my friends treasure.”

Willa stopped at the willow tree and looked back, surprised. “Guess you’re not so bad.”
           I picked up my fiddle to play Binks’ Sake in my cottage one last time.
           “We better meet again! Not that I want to see you; Dad does!” Willa called as she waved in front of the setting sun.
            “Of course. The third time I see you will also be under the willow tree.”
