As they pulled into Nanohara’s port, Vivi couldn’t stop herself from leaning forwards towards the land. Finally, she was at Alabasta, after so much trouble, after so long. Finally, I’m home. She turned her face upwards to the sky and closed her eyes, feeling the sun’s warm heat beat down on her face. She took a deep breath, drinking in the hot air. She could almost feel the sun’s rays wrapping around her body, permeating her skin and baking her bones. It felt marvelous to feel warm all the way through to her marrow.
“It’s hot!” Chopper complained, staring up at the unforgiving sun in the Alabastan sky. Vivi opened her eyes and smiled down at him, understanding his consternation completely. Back on Drum Island, she couldn’t believe that a land could be so cold. And worse, water was everywhere and no one could drink it. Growing up in a desert where water was sacred, it seemed a sort of blasphemy to have so much around and be unable to use it.
“It’ll get worse,” she said, sympathetically. “On the coast, there’s plenty of breeze to bring the temperature down. Inland, we won’t have that luxury.”
“It’ll get worse?!” Chopper wailed, falling backwards on Merry’s deck in a pseudo-faint. “I’m going to die! Reindeer aren’t meant for the desert!”
No, they're not, Vivi thought to herself, her hands tightening on Merry’s rails in anticipation. But I definitely am.
