Alek nodded at the cousin of the current Lezard heir, who had swung by to wish him happy holidays.
“Nothing strange, of course,” Aidan chimed, “it would be a shame not to greet each other for the holidays. Many invaluable professors come from your family, after all!”
“There are no objections,” Alek noted. “I trust the Lezards have been well?”
“As well as we can be!”
“Send Klaus my regards,” said Alek. The dean of the school had taken off with the Chen woman. For safety or not, Alek did not think it an admirable move, not on the part of the Lezards, at least. The head and heir were central. They were the constants of their families, the building stones, the steps to the families’ promise.
To see another heir running was a shame, but no matter. The Ivanovs would rise to the occasion. He would make it so.
“Any other messages?” Aidan’s smile didn’t fade. The other man shook his head, once and firmly.
It was dark out, the night air of Christmas Eve crisp and fresh. Alek twisted open the bottle cap of wine-one from his birth year. He would toast to one of the biggest holidays celebrated around the world, mindlessly and out of habit. After all, what did even Christmas or a new year even matter? The only year that would remain his memory was the one in which the world would acknowledge and fear the Ivanov name.
It would happen during his lifetime. He was sure of it.
