But I have to read this full-length play tonight and offer a serious critique. I can't just say LOLYOUREDUMB. And I need to mock it.
Synopsis
Mary Surratt was the first woman to be executed in the United States, because of her involvement with Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth. Known as "the woman who kept the nest," this boardinghouse matron was arrested without charge, tried in a military tribunal and went to the gallows an innocent woman.
Her son, John Surratt -- who was more complicit in the crime -- was arrested two years later and tried in an open court by his peers -- on the same evidence that killed his mother. The trial ended in a hung jury, because there was not enough evidence to convict.
Set at Camp X-Ray in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the play utilizes a mock trial -- as well as a Greek chorus that includes Muslim and Japanese detainees -- to explore this cautionary tale for our post-9/11 world where habeas corpus has once again been denied.
WHY IS IT SET IN GUANTANAMO BAY?????
If I ever think it is a good idea to work in a theater ever again...
Also: my boss just emailed me asking me for an immediate complete cast list of a play that I am not involved in and have never even seen.
