Thoughts on Primaries

Feb 05, 2008 21:08

The Wisconsin primaries aren't until the 19th, but I won't be voting.  Nope.  I (stupidly) didn't realize that I needed to re-register for an absentee ballot this year.  We have a new town clerk, and I'm obviously not in the same place as I was last year.  I'm really upset about this.  I keep kicking myself.  I like voting, and I sincerely believe that if you don't vote, you forfeit your right to complain about the state of the government.  Not that the WI primary counts for anything anyway:  all the candidates I wanted to vote for have dropped out because our primary system is stupid, and all the states that had theirs earlier have much more influence.  I hate our political system sometimes.  I just really want to change three things:  1.  multiparty system.  2.  no electoral college--election by popular vote.  3.  primaries on the same day so no state has more influence than others.  I mean, Iowa?  Really?  What is that?  I heartily disapprove.  Furthermore, I'm not much of a fan of Clinton or Obama.  Like, at all.  To me, they're basically the same.  People keep telling me that Clinton is better on domestic issues and Obama is better on foreign policy.  In the end, though, they'll probably be about equal on women's rights, poverty, and health-care (though John Edwards would have been much better on the last two).  And when it comes down to it, I'd vote for either with a clear conscience in the general election.
