i have been an "anything but domino's" person for years.
i give restaurants two strikes.
always have.
the only reason they even get a second chance is that i understand everyone has off days.
domino's has been given vastly more strikes than two, but after all the commercials, the hype, and now my friends telling me how great the new pizza is, i decided i was going to wipe their slate clean.
"hey papa john's, who's your daddy now?"
read the headline on the domino's flyer in my mail today.
them's fightin' words. i LOVE papa john's.
according to the flyer, domino's new recipe beat papa john's and pizza hut in a recent national taste test. so today was to be the day, i gave domino's another chance.
i walked in and ordered the two medium two topping deal they're running right now and here's my verdict.
overall: the two pizza's where drastically different, and not just the toppings. the cheese, crust, and sauce all fared differently on the two. i wonder if two different people made them?? i'm also disappointed that the new crust is only their hand tossed. (the thin and deep dish have not changed.) generally, i liked the new pizza. on my list, it has risen to "better than pizza hut, but still nothin' on papa john's!" i will eat their new pizza again, on purpose even.
pizza 1: pepperoni and black olives
first bite: "aaaah gawddammit that's hot! my bad... i'll let it cool off a little."
crust: nicely cooked, crispy outside, chewy inside, the new garlic cheese oil on the edge is salty and delicious
sauce: flavorful and a little spicy, the days of bland are over!
cheese: doesn't seem to be anything special or different than i remember, i wish there was more
overall: thumbs up, 4/5
pizza 2: ham and pineapple
first bite: "hmmmmmmmm... why is this sorta like old domino's...?"
crust: chewy and doughy, undercooked? still digging the garlic oil edge!
sauce: i can barely tell there's sauce on this one, bland is back...
cheese: it's actually stringy!!! gawd i love real cheese :o)
overall: this was a little reminiscent of the old domino's, good thing pizza 1 was good, 3/5
