2009: The year of Reclamation

Jan 01, 2009 10:30

So it begins. My life needs to change for the better and this is the year it is going to. I will reclaim Brent's life back. I'm not attempting to return to some point in my past. Instead, I will take my LIFE back and get on with the business of living that I have let grow stagnant ( Read more... )

I love this name, and the meaning behind it! Further, I love that the tradition of naming the new year has moved out to you guys. It makes me happy to see people pick up on a good thing.

These are GREAT resolutions -- challenging, but totally attainable. They have nice breadth to them across different areas of your life. Here are a few thoughts:

#3 - See if your area has a section on freecycle.org. It's a site Marie introduced me to. People exchanging totally free stuff all the time. It's a wonderful place to get rid of the junk you don't want, and often find helpful things like shelves to organize the stuff you do want. Free. It's worth investigating. Craig's List is good for this, too.

#5 - Have you heard of the book, The Five Love Languages? I was introduced to it this year and I've become a cultist devotee of it. I can honestly say that it's improved all my human relationships, not just my romance with Ian. It's all about how people communicate and receive messages of love. The author has broken these methods down to five basic "languages" of people who enjoy Quality Time, Touch, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, and Acts of Service. It's the sort of common sense stuff you wish you'd thought of on your own, but which changes everything. I can't recommend it highly enough to a married couple, I really can't.

#6 - Do you know pandora.com? Sign up! Free, and to my knowledge I have not been bombarded with spam for registering there. It's free streaming audio. You give it an example of music you like -- as specific as one song, or as general as an artist, collection of artists, or genre. It picks music that is technically similar and plays it for you. You cannot control which song you hear other than to skip ones you don't like. No downloads -- just live streaming. It is a wonderful way to get introduced to new music with a reasonable degree of having it be something you'll like.

One thing I love so much about sharing New Year's Resolutions is that you never know what resources are out there in world for you. You'd never say to a random acquaintence, "I'd like your help expanding my horizons." But you post your New Year's Resolutions about some specifics, and voila! The outpouring and exchange of ideas can easily begin.

Best of luck in 09,
Trace
