Ms. Sway’s writing seemed foreign and out of place.
Today’s new unit: Demography-study of population
The whiteboard was always blank and useless.
Today, it was the contrary.
With my chin cupped in my left hand,
Ms. Sway’s voice drowned into my thoughts.
I looked around the classroom,
stopping at each face. My eyes landed on Tristan;
he sat leaning back with his hands folded,
as if nothing in the world could disturb peace.
A pocket of cigarettes hung from his pocket,
daring to be exposed amongst his sins;
his eyes-still.
As if he was trailing after my thoughts,
he turned his head slightly and looked at me.
I rolled my eyes and scrunched my nose in disgust.
“Tristan, why do we study demography?”
The class turned to him and waited for
Ms. Sway’s to answer. Tristan looked at me,
I raised my brows and he started to speak.
As he spoke, I felt myself shrink back in humiliation.
My pride shattered by a mere question never
intended to be answered.
Written for my poetry portfolio, Mr. Young gave us 12 writing prompts. This one was “ write about a time you learned something”: I finished it 2 minutes ago. I don’t plan to edit anything…just yet.
