I keep thinking about all of the people out there whose lives are miserable, whether it's because of poverty, political oppression, social oppression, or physical or emotional illness. Why do we persist? Sometimes I'm surprised the suicide rate isn't higher. If life does not bring one joy, what is the point in living? Do we, as beings, matter? If human life ceased, would the universe be different in any way? I think we create religion, God, to convince ourselves that we do matter, that there is something larger out there then survival. So many people are just surviving, often using drugs, alcohol, prescription or non-, to bring a few moments of feeling like there really is something larger, that there is joy.
Is it an illusion? Are love and joy just made out of chemicals in our nervous systems? Or is there something greater? I think I have to believe that even if what we feel is a receptor response, that it is there to connect us to something larger, that the love we feel and project to the universe creates something greater. It is love that creates God. And that is why we matter.
