Wednesday Reading Meme

Yuletide has happened. Like I already mentioned, the story I got is lovely. As for the story I wrote, well - my recipient seems to like it, but precious few other people have clicked on it. Oh well...

Apart from that, well - I went with certain mysterious individuals to see the last Crazy Christmas Cabaret, which was a bittersweet experience. It wasn't quite as good as last year, but I had a nice evening. I've seen The Last Jedi and was - not particularly impressed? But I went with
blnchflr, who went back for more two days later, so - opinions vary? And yesterday I watched Bright, the new Netflix urban fantasy movie, and was underwhelmed.

What I've recently finished reading

Steve Orlando: Virgil
I liked his Midnighter comics, but this? Not so much. It's kinda dull...

Jesper Wung-Sung: En anden gren
I found this novel very interesting. It's a fictionalized (and how much is fiction and how much is fact I would like to know, but JWS is a fiction writer, not a writer of biographies, so fiction is had to be, I suppose) story of how his great-grandparents met and their life together, from his great grandfather came to Denmark to be exhibited in Tivoli's Chinese village in 1902. It's an interesting book, and it's good at bringing early 20th century Copenhagen to life in so many little ways - but it's also a violent and unpleasant book, as the main characters get repeatedly assaulted and ostracized in various ways for their interracial relationship. And then you get a nice spot of hope and life is nice in pre-war Germany, which is nicer to the pair of them than Denmark were - until war breaks out and the locals fail to see a difference between a Chinese person and one of the Japanese people they were at war with back then.

Halfdan Pisket: Desertør
Halfdan Pisket: Kakerlak
Halfdan Pisket: Dansker
The story of the author's father, how he grew up in the border region between Turkey and Armenia, and how he came to Denmark and stayed, not exactly legally. It grew more interesting as the story developed, though I must confess, the art is not my usual taste in comics.

Makoto Yukimura: Vinland Saga vol. 8.

Bernard Cornwell: The Flame Bearer
Finally. So, that's book 10, and if the tv show does about two books a season - though they'll need to replace or at least age up the actor considerably soon.

Mike Mignola: B.P.R.D.: 1947
I quite enjoyed this little tale of vampires in post-WWII Europe.

What I'm reading now

Carrie Vaughn's Kitty saves the world, which I got for Xmas.

What I'm reading next

Lukian's Havdialoger, which I am too lazy to look up what is usually called in English right now. It's short and I've got a Goodreads goal to reach. My Bali trip sabotaged me.

Total number of books and comics read this year: 197
