False Colors
Oh boys - it's not enough that the whole world is getting in your way, you have to add to it, playing out your own personal variation of Pride & Prejudice shenanigans? Oh boys. And the really sad part is, that while the book ends on a happy enough note, I'm less than convinced these boys will get themselves a happily ever after.

Alan Bradley
The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag
So, Flavia de Luce is essentially Sherlock - if Sherlock was an 11-year-old girl in the 50's with an eccentric family and an obsession with chemicals. Who solves crime. And even has her own personal Lestrade-like fellow among the local police, appropriate long-suffering and all. All she's really missing is a Watson. Because as far as characters go, she really needs someone to sort of bounce off, and the books are kind of missing that.

Changeless & Blameless
Wait! Where's the rest? I want to know how things turn out between Lord Akeldama and Biffy, dammit! Come on! Ahem.
While not quite as fun as the first novel (how many series manage that, anyway?), still great fun. Personally, I particularly love the secondary characters - vampire dandy Lord Akeldama, mildmannered werewolf Professor Lyall, the crossdressing lesbian mad scientist Madame Lefoux - as well as the world building that's going on. That said, where is the next book, dammit?!

Torben Guldberg
Sange om udødeligheden
Okay, so this is the sequel - well, prequel, strictly speaking, I suppose - of Teser om eksistensen af kærlighed, which is an absolute awesome book. This is quite good too, though not quite up to the standards set by the first. Genre-wise, it falls somewhere between magical realism and historical fantasy - the main character is a thousand-year-old immortal (and we actually get his story this time around), but a lot of the tale are these not-quite-short-stories, and it's quite good.

Molly Harper
Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs
In my defense, it has a vampire librarian - it's just, just once I'd love to see a story where a somewhat realistic librarian manages to kick ass by being a librarian. Also, book actually looses points with me for having the young woman being a children's librarian - come on, snap out of the stereotypes, dammit.

Gregory Maguire
Wicked & Son of a Witch
I quite liked Wicked - it's a lot darker than the musical it spawned, more adult, more dystopic - and very good. The world is a chilling one. I like that it's so obviously based on the book series, and the musical so obviously changed to fit the movie instead. The sequel's alright, but not nearly as good - more meandering and loose ends that doesn't exactly get tied up.

Carrie Vaughn
Kitty goes to war
Still fun. Cormac is back, so that's good, and Kitty keeps getting complications into her life. So that's all fine :-)
