WMM doesn't work anymore for me either. It used to, but then it suddenly stopped. Because of this I think I tried pretty much every free software available on the internet, but I didn't really find anything I like. You can get a free trial of a software called Arc Soft Show Biz though, and that's probably the best video editing software I've ever tried. When it comes to image editing I've also tried a lot of different thing. Adobe Photoshop is definitely the best, but not free of course. There might be a free trial available though, I'm not sure. Paint shop pro is also pretty good, but only the 30 days trial is for free. I also used something called GIMP or something for a while, that's free and pretty okay for a basic image editing software. Some also like Paint.net, but I can't really say I ever liked it. If you just need it for basic photo editing like adding shadows, basic blurring, black/white, sepia or colour effects I recommend Picasa 2.
Also if you go to www.oldversion.com you find lists of softwares sorted in categories, all of them either free or free for trial periods. That's usually where I go when I need something, cause you have all the lists of recommended softwares in one place.
