I love movies. I love the Oscars.
No, wait. I hate the Oscars.
Let me explain.
I love the Oscars because I love movies. I love the art of film making. I love the art of acting. I watch movies the way I read books--with a critical eye. And, as many of you know, I'm an incorrigible Hollywood gossip whore.
What I hate about the Oscars is all the political bullshit. Though it's always been there, it's gotten worse over the years. Just once I would like to enjoy three hours of honoring the best and the most talented members of the film industry without some idiot using it as political arena. Seriously, is that too much to ask for? Can you people NOT just shut up about whatever conservative political figure is pissing you off right now? Do you honestly think anyone in the audience, in spite of their hardy-har-hars, gives a rat's ass about your opinion?
Oh wait. They do. Because they're all just like YOU.
Can we not just have ONE NIGHT of pure fun? Entertainment? Appreciation? Gratitude? without insulting the very people who put you on that stage? Not, of course, that any of this is new. It's been going on for decades. I've been watching the Oscars since I was a kid. When Marlon Brando refused the Academy Award for THE GODFATHER to protest the treatment of Native Americans, I remember thinking Man, this guy is an MORON!!!!--and I was in high school then. Congrats, Marlon, you classless, narcissistic putz. You really made a difference.
I use to throw Oscar parties. Now, no one I know even wants to watch the show. Oddly enough, I still do. But I watch it because I LOVE MOVIES. I watch it for the film clips. I watch it for the glamor. I watch it especially when there is an emcee that I like, meaning one who isn't crude and obnoxious and full of himself. I watch it to see the actors, writers, musicians, film makers, etc., I admire the most, just to get a glimpse of them as people, not as "actors" or people behind the scenes. Their opinions on politics means about as much to me as the mildew growing on my bathroom tiles. Less, actually.
So...on Sunday night I will reporting LIVE from the Academy Awards! I'm ready to go. Here is my dress:
(no handbag necesssary--or possible--as you can see)
And my shoes:
And here is my hunky date--I met him on the Internet:
