The American Youth

Presidential hopeful John Kerry isn't the only thing to flip-flop recently. According to a new poll published by Newsweek, the magazine found that among young voters, those under 30 years of age, 47 percent felt the country was headed on the right track, a startling number when only two weeks ago 54% felt it was headed in the wrong direction. During August 54% of these voters approved of the handling of the Iraq situation; now it's down to 41%, a drop of 13 points. Right in the center of the article is a link, in red, that allows the reader to take part in the live poll. Not all the questions deal with political issues like: When it comes to handling foreign-policy issues and the war on terrorism do you approve, disapprove or have mixed feelings about the way George W. Bush is handling that issue?. The last question of the poll states simply: Who is more fun? It seems that the youth of America do want to get involved this election year and most have their minds made up (according to the poll only 4% are undecided). With the relative closeness of the last election and the possible more close race this year America's youth have a huge chance of actually affecting the outcome, if they get out and vote. If the youth doesn't vote this election year, a first for many college students, then it will be hard to motivate the same group in years to come.
