Laundry machines and women's lib

As is the habit of many college students such as myself, I tend to save most of my laundry, especially the complicated hand washing kind, for when I come home.  Really, this habit isn't so good considering that the result is that I tend to run out of clothes during finals (case in point: I was wearing the same shirt as my (male) graduate student when I met with him on the last day of school), and that once I get home I'm forced to spend a solid day washing everything that has accumulated over the past who knows how long.
But, as I was sorting out my colors from my whites, I suddenly realized how much easier life is with a washing machine and with these magical stain removing products.  Instead of standing and scrubbing until my fingers were raw, I just poured some Soillove (it's amazing) and then deposited my clothes in the washing machine--thirty minutes later, my clothes were sparkling clean.
Now, as annoying as laundry is now, I can barely fathom how much worse it would be if I had to wash everything by hand.  Laundry would take hours and hours, and my clothes probably would not look nearly as stain-free as they do now.  In fact, with only a small stretch of the imagination, I can visualize laundry consuming a bulk of the time I have to spend in my day.  With so much laundry, I probably wouldn't have time to do anything else--like have a job.  Or vote.  Hence the title.
So, that was when I took a moment to thank the Maytag man for giving us a working laundry machine.   And dishwasher too.
