[character]: Syaoran (Clone)
[character history / background]: Syaoran is actually a clone, created seven years ago by a man named Fei Wong Reed. Syaoran was cloned from a boy called "Syaoran" Li (whom will be referred to as "Syaoran" for the sake of clarity), designed specifically so that he would one day travel across the dimensions in search of a set of items. He would have been turned loose on the world of Clow that way, soulless and unfeeling, had "Syaoran" not interfered. At the last second in the middle of the cloning process, "Syaoran" copied his soul into one of his eyes, sealed it in with a powerful magic, and then ripped the eye out and placed it into Syaoran's right socket. It blinded Syaoran in his right eye, but gave him something he wouldn't have otherwise had: a soul. "Syaoran" had ensured that Fei Wong Reed would unable to remove the eye -- and therefore the soul -- without destroying the clone as well, and Reed would be unable to create another clone of the same strength. Deciding that the clone would fulfill his purposes just fine, soul or not, Fei Wong sent Syaoran to the country of Clow.
Syaoran doesn't know any of this. His earliest memory is of suddenly becoming aware in the country of Clow, propped up against the wall in the middle of one of the desert country's rare rainstorms. He might have simply remained that way, but an archeologist named Fujitaka found Syaoran, adopted him, and gave him a name -- which, perhaps not incidentally, was the very name name that Syaoran's original's father was named. Not long after gaining his new name, Syaoran met Princess Sakura. Despite having "Syaoran's" soul copied into him, Syaoran was still a very quiet, almost sullen child, aware that he was odd and stood out among his peers for not knowing his history, birthday, or even his real name. Sakura did not treat him with pity, though, and instead gave Syaoran a birthday (the same as hers) and treated him the way she would anyone else.
This did wonders for Syaoran, and slowly he began to open up to the princess. Over the next seven years the two of them grew closer and closer, and at one point Syaoran learned how to fight from a man named Seishirou. Syaoran traveled from country to country with his father, Fujitaka, learning the archeologist's methods and gaining a love of history and knowledge. When Fujitaka died in an accident Syaoran continued on in his father's stead, vowing to see and do as much as he could in order to honor his father's memory. King Clow passed on and his son, Touya, ascended to the throne in his stead, but life proceeded as normal.
But then one day disaster, as it is wont to do, struck. The Kingdom of Clow was attacked and Sakura's memories were changed into feathers and scattered across the dimensions. Yukito, the High Priest, realized what had happened and sent both Syaoran and Sakura to a woman named Yuuko, the Witch of Dimensions. It was in Yuuko's shop that Syaoran met two other travelers -- Fai D. Fluorite and Kurogane. All three of them had a wish; Syaoran wished to recover Sakura's feathers (the task he had been initially created for, though he didn't realize this), Kurogane wished to return to his home plane, and Fai wished to never return to his home plane. Though their goals were different the means to achieve them were the same and in exchange for their most valuable possessions, Yuuko granted them the use of a magical construct called Mokona, which would allow them to travel across the dimensions.
Unfortunately, Syaoran's most valuable possession was the deep friendship he shared with Sakura. Though it was not an easy choice to make, Syaoran didn't hesitate; the alternative was allowing Sakura to die, and he wouldn't allow that. He sacrificed Sakura's relationship with him, and the four of them (plus Mokona!) left for their first world. For several months Syaoran and his companions have traveled like this, jumping from world to world and collecting Sakura's feathers as they went. In Hanshin Syaoran learned more about the ins-and-outs of the multiverse, encountering else-world versions of two men he'd know for most his life and seeing just how different one world could be from another -- and also feeling the full impact of the price he'd paid to Yuuko. It was one thing to simply know Sakura wouldn't remember him, but to have her wake up and ask, 'Who are you?' was something else entirely.
Still, their adventure continued. In the country of Koryo the group met Chu'nyan and helped her get rid of the ryanban that was oppressing her town's people. In Jade country they ran across a man named Kyle Rondart (an agent for Fei Wong Reed, though it would be a long time before any of them realized this), a man who was also seeking Sakura's feathers. In Outo Kurogane taught Syaoran how to use a blade, and the group encountered Syaoran's old teacher, Seishirou -- who not only acquired one of Sakura's feathers, but also managed to leave the world with it in hand. From there the group traveled to Shara, and subsequently ended up thrown back in time to Shura, Shara's past. After unintentionally altering history they were returned to Shara, and Mokona whisked them away to the next world before they had time to so much as reorient themselves to the altered present. In Piffle they entered a race in order to obtain Sakura's next feather and once again encountered Kyle Rondart.
The next world, that last one Syaoran visited before being drawn to the city, was called Rekort. Rekort looked to be a dream come true, with libraries packed from floor to ceiling with more books than Syaoran could imagine. One such a book was magical in nature, and showed Syaoran a vision of Kurogane's past. Syaoran saw everything from Kurogane's childhood to the young man's first proper meeting with Princess Tomoyo before his friends managed to pry the book out of his grasp. When they did Syaoran collapsed, and when he woke up he explained to Kurogane what he had seen in the book. The book gave them a lead, however: the symbol printed on the cover resembled the one on Sakura's feathers, and with that in mind the group set out to locate the original book -- to steal it, it turned out, because they wouldn't be allowed to borrow it. The fight that ensued with the library's guardian beasts nearly saw the end of the group, but some fortunate timing on the part of Fai and Fai's magic allowed Mokona to gather up the the group and send them from Rekort to the next world.
For Syaoran, that next world was the city.
[character abilities]: Syaoran has almost nothing in the way of magic or related skills. Though he is able to sense the energies and presences of things both living and not and quickly adapt to else-world 'magics' (such as the kudan in Hanshin), the extent of his supernatural abilities ends there -- though he has the potential to learn such things, especially anything in relation to fire. Instead of magic, Syaoran relies on his own natural strength and speed to serve him in battle. Though he's short and wiry Syaoran is very strong, especially in the legs; he can kick hard enough to break bones and rocks and fast enough to deflect crossbow bolts. He had high endurance and pain tolerance as well, able to (temporarily) shove aside even severe pains in favor of pressing forward and continuing in his mission.
Though he still favors unarmed combat, Syaoran also had some skill in using a sword. His teacher was Kurogane, so Syaoran's style mimics the man's, relying on his natural speed and strength to land and deflect blows. As a final note, Syaoran is blind in his right eye. While he has largely overcome this obstacle, thanks to Kurogane's training, attacks from his blindside can still catch him unawares.
[character personality]: There's little room for distractions in Syaoran's life. Whatever task Syaoran takes upon himself -- be it working at a dig site, studying in a library, or rescuing baby birds -- he approaches with a steady, single-minded determination, becoming so focused and wrapped up in his task that he'll forget about the world around him, including his own health and needs. Any task that Syaoran sets out on he will finish no matter what, and it's this sort of determination that gives him the strength to continue traveling through the worlds in search of Sakura's feathers, despite knowing that Sakura would never remember him.
It's not a natural strength, though. Syaoran is a clone and while he was a blank slate for the most part, he has been hardwired to seek out Sakura's feathers, destroying anything that stands in his way and using any means necessary to do so. The soul of "Syaoran" has allowed Syaoran to overcome this, and as a result this single minded determination to seek out the feathers had bled out and now affects how Syaoran behaves when it comes to other, non-feather related tasks. Most notably, it's changed how he approaches exploration and the acquisition of knowledge. Syaoran is terribly curious and easily fascinated related to history. Despite his young age he was one of the primary members of the dig team in Clow and usually among the first of those present to understand the oddities and mysteries of the things they found. He's intelligent and quick-witted, and rather perceptive as well.
In addition to being very determined, Syaoran is a calm and compassionate person as well. Despite his nature as a clone he's got a strong sense of what's right and what's wrong, and the idea of tampering with the natural order of things unsettles him. Similarly, he believes that history should be studied and taken note of, but believes even more strongly that historical artifacts should be treasured and preserved. Perhaps his biggest fear, after the death of Sakura, is that he'll break something old and priceless that cannot be replaced. To say that he values the preservation of knowledge and history above all else would be a stretch, but he'll still go out of his way preserve and study strange artifacts or prevent them from being damaged in a fight.
Though Syaoran has mostly grown out of the quiet and almost sullen midnset he had as a child, several habits from that time linger. Though bright and curious Syaoran errs on the side of being quiet, preferring to sit and listen instead of sit and talk. He's polite almost to a fault and tries his best to not insult someone or break the rules, though if someone has threatened himself, his friends (especially Princess Sakura), or innocents all bets are typically off. He's a kind person and does his best to not upset others, much preferring to adopt a smile and insist that he's fine than let others know that he's hurt or upset or worried. Similarly, Syaoran can be very shy; he's prone to blushing easily and stutters when embarrassed.
Lastly, Syaoran is a very serious individual. While he doesn't consider himself above laughing, playing, and joking around, his work and his responsibilities come first. He believes in taking breaks in order to avoid burning himself out, but it tends to take a lot of determination before someone can manage to drag him away from what he considers his duty. He takes responsibility for all of his actions and doesn't allow others to suffer through punishments in his stead.

[journal post]: (OOC: Written as a voice post.) --so how do I get this to... Oh! There. Ah, test-test-test? Does this work? [click]
[click] It works! Ah, Kurogane-san, Fai-san, Princess, Mokona! Are any of you here? It's me, Syaoran. We were supposed to be leaving Rekort, but when I got here none of you were nearby. This little machine was with me when I got here and it's recording whatever I say. I guess if you can't hear me I could still....
[silence for several seconds, and then:] Ahh, my name is Syaoran. I'm an archeologist from the country of Clow. I've been traveling from country to country with my friends, but I'm not sure where I am now, or where my friends went. If anyone can hear this, could you please reply? And if you find this machine and listen to this recording later on but I'm not here... never mind. [click]
[third person / log sample]: A lot of people didn't pay Syaoran much mind. City residents came in all shapes an sizes, after all. They certainly didn't pay a teenager so absorbed in his journal he barely paid anything else any mind, and Syaoran was perfectly content with that for now. He was hardly unsociable, but coming to this world had done nothing at all to dampen his enthusiasm for history and lost and forgotten knowledge. While the strangely shaped statue was hardly lost or forgotten, it was still (probably) a historical site and while he really wasn't an artist, Syaoran was still determined to painstakingly sketch out the statue from this angle before he did the same for other angles.
Artist or not, he was at least a fair hand at sketching. Ask him to draw something from memory or his imagination and the quality would be dubious at best, but set him in front of an old statue or a bit of ruin and give him a pencil and some paper and he could produce an accurate technical sketch almost without thinking about it. The time the drawings took to compile certainly did nothing to curb his enthusiasm, and he'd long since learned to regard them as giving him the time necessary to properly study, observe, and absorb whatever site he was looking at at the time. A habit he'd picked up from his father, and a skill he had no intention of letting rust.
It also meant he wouldn't miss any details he might have otherwise overlooked, though it did mean he missed some details about things that were not ruins or historical sites. For example, it had taken him a bit to realize that the building not twenty feet behind him probably had some significance as well, and had he not glanced around and noticed a handful of people gathered around the entrance it would have slipped his mind completely until he had finished with his drawing. It was a sight designed to quirk his curiosity, but he could still keep himself focused. The statue first!
