Fandom: Doctor Who (AU)
Characters/pairings: Amy, Eleven, Rory; Amy/Rory, with past Amy/Eleven and hints of Amy/Eleven/Rory
Rating: PG-13, to be safe
Word count/track count: somewhere between 1k-2k words/16 songs
Spoilers: all of season five, no spoilers about next season.
Disclaimer: Amy and her boys do not belong to me.
Summary: An interview with the up-and-coming band, My Poncho Boys. For the au_bingo prompt "Other: Band".

Author note: This is my first ever fanmix. Meeps? This is also the first time I've ever written these characters. Double meeps? What made it even harder is that since it's an AU fanmix, there has to be some kind of story behind the songs. Why does My Poncho Boys sing these particular songs? So... I tried. If a lot of songs seem like they could be for canon, well, let's just say this universe is only a step over from the canon, hence the similarities. Anyway! Have at it.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL PERUVIAN FOLK BAND
an interview with My Poncho Boys

[originally published at the online music zine Song Beneath the Song]

Song Beneath the Song: Everyone is curious; how did you come up with the name of the group and the album?

Amy Pond: [points at John “the Doctor” Smith] It’s because of his horrid taste in clothes.

JDS: Oi! Bowties are cool!

AP: No. No, they are not. One day a couple of years ago we were hanging out at his flat when the heat when out. It was the middle of winter, and bloody cold. While he went to tinker with the heater, I tried to find some blankets. Everyone should have blankets. Instead, he has these ponchos that he had picked during his travels. Ponchos! The three of put them on, and I said something about us looking like a Peruvian folk band and called them my poncho boys and there you have it.

Journey to the Past - Aaliyah
somewhere down this road
I know someone's waiting
years of dreams just can't be wrong

SBS: Amy, you’re originally from Scotland, correct?

AP: Really? Is that were my accent comes from?

SBS: [laughs] Sorry.

AP: No, it’s okay. Yeah, I moved to England to live with my aunt when I was little. I just never lost the accent.

SBS: Do you miss living in Scotland?

AP: Yes and no. When I lived in Scotland, my parents were still alive. I still miss them sometimes. Moving to a small village in England where most of the people think you’re a bit loony… I never really fit in there. It took being reunited with a childhood friend to finally feel like I had found home.

Medicine Man - The Hush Sound
medicine man, you danced me across the country
medicine man, you danced across the sky

SBS: John.

JDS: Doctor.

SBS: Sorry. Doctor. Why do they call you that?

JDS: Doesn’t everyone want to be a doctor when they grow up? Rory! You wanted to be a doctor, right?

Rory Williams: Uh, I suppose.

JDS: There you go!

SBS: So you’re actually a doctor.

JDS: I traveled the world for a while, studying people and their cultures and history. I’m pretty knowledgeable.

SBS: That didn’t answer my question.

JDS: What was it again?

A Whole New World - Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle
a whole new world
a new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no or where to go
or say we're only dreaming

SBS: Rory, how do you feel about the duets between Amy and the Doctor?

RW: … How should I feel?

SBS: Well, there’s the fact that you and Amy are a couple…

RW: Oh. OH. Oh, no, they don’t bother me. Amy and the Doctor are just friends, good friends, best friends. I mean, yeah, she did run off with for a few months when he came back into town after years of being gone…

SBS: Really…

RW: No, not like that! I mean, they did have a brief thing or something, but, uh…

AP: Rory. Shut. Up.

RW: Right. Sorry.

History Song - The Good, the Band and the Queen
if you don't know it now then you will do
if you don't know it now then you will do

JDS: History! I love history! Everyone has history. History is good.

AP: Yes, but history is history. So! Moving on!

Extraordinary Machine - Fiona Apple
be kind to me, or treat me mean
I'll make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machine

SBS: Rumor has that one of your songs is about… pepper pots?

JDS: [seriously] Yes.

AP: [bursts into laughter]

SBS: Am I going to get the story behind it?

JDS: It’s a very long story. We’d be here all week if I started telling it.

AP: Let’s just say that if you combine too much time and a lot of alcohol, you get evil robot pepper pots trying to take over the world.

Monsters and Angels - Voice of the Beehive
there are monsters there are angels,
there's a peacefulness and a rage inside us all
there is sugar and there is salt
there is ice and there is fire, in every single heart
there are monsters there are angels.

SBS: According to the crib notes, a R. Song penned one of the songs. Who is R. Song?

JDS: That is a very good question.

AP: She’s a friend. The Doctor knows her better than Rory and I do.

RW: It’s kind of scary how she sometimes seems to know more about us then we know about her.

AP: Yeah… maybe the Doctor told her? I think they have some kind of history.

JDS: That is a very good question.

Nineteen - Old 97’s
all I ever wanted to do
was lie around in bed with you.
I was only nineteen. I was only nineteen.

SBS: I’m sorry, Amy, but since you brought back up history, I have to ask about “Nineteen”. The crib notes say Amy wrote it, with the Doctor singing. Who is the song really about?

RW: …[looks at Amy]

AP: …[looks at the Doctor]

JDS: …[coughs] Well. …well.

AP: [rolls eyes] Okay, fine! Yes, I had a thing for the Doctor! I couldn’t help liking him, he was the best thing that happened in my life.

RW: …thanks.

Young Folks - Peter, Bjorn & John
if i told you things i did before
told you how i used to be
would you go along with someone like me

AP: But like we said earlier, that’s history. Everyone has history. Who cares. The Doctor is still my best friend, but he’s just that. My friend.

Could It Be - Christy Carlson Ramano
could it be you were right here beside me and I never knew
could it be that it's true that it's you

SBS: By the way, Amy, Rory, congratulations on your wedding this last June.

RW: Thanks.

AP: Thank you! [kisses Rory]

JDS: [claps]

Changes - Butterfly Boucher featuring David Bowie
ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
(turn and face the strange)
ch-ch-changes
don’t tell them to grow up and out of it
ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

SBS: What would you say the overall theme of the album is?

AP: Finding where you belong.

JDS: Friendship.

RW: Accepting changes for the good.

AP: Believing in the impossible and never giving up.

Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) - Tori Amos
now I understand what you tried to say to me,
how you suffered for your sanity,
how you tried to set them free.

SBS: Most debut albums don’t have live tracks on them. What makes “Vincent” special?

AP: Doctor, could you…I don’t think…

JDS: Yeah. We had this friend, Vincent. He was a lot like Vincent van Gogh, loved to paint. Unfortunately, he was… too much like van Gogh. We happened to be performing a small concert in France on the one year anniversary of his death. Amy sang it as a tribute to him. It’s the only time she’s ever sang it.

SBS: I’m sorry for your loss.

AP: [sniffs] Yeah, it’s… yeah. He was a good man.

Superman's Song - Crash Test Dummies
folks said his family were all dead
planet crumbled but Superman, he forced himself
to carry on, forget Krypton, and keep going

SBS: Rory, you’re usually in the background of the ground. What made you chose to sing “Superman’s Song”?

RW: I was perfectly happy not singing, but Amy and the Doctor insisted.

SBS: I’m glad they insisted. It’s a good song. The answer is probably no, but is the song about anyone other than Superman?

RW: [looks at the Doctor] No.

JDS: [looks at Rory] Yes. It’s about Rory.

RW: Wha… no it’s not! If anyone, it’s about you!

JDS: Now, Rory. Don’t be bashful. You can tell us.

RW: Wh-what?

AP: [rolls eyes] May I introduce my boys.

Don't Stop Believin' - Glee Cast
just a small town girl livin' in a lonely world
she took the midnight train goin' anywhere
just a city boy born and raised in South Detroit
he took the midnight train goin' anywhere

SBS: You said that the theme of the album is, if I recall, “believing and not giving up.” Does that mean “Don’t Stop Believin’” is the main theme song of the album?

AP: I suppose? We also said there are other themes, ones that fit other songs better. Several of the songs on the album are important, and could be called theme songs. “Don’t Stop Believin’” just happens to be one of them.

Band on the Run - Wings
well, the night was falling as the desert world began to settle down
in the town they're searching for us everywhere
but we never will be found
band on the run, band on the run

SBS: Now that your album has come out, what do you plan to do next?

AP: Rory and I never got a proper honeymoon, so we’re going to do some travelling. We’re thinking of taking a ride on the Orient Express.

SBS: What about you, Doctor?

JDS: I’ll go back to travelling. Always travelling, that’s me.

SBS: Is there any chance this travelling will be together?

AP: [looking at the Doctor] Of course not!

RW: [looking at Amy] It’s our honeymoon.

JDS: [looking at Rory] Why would I interrupt that?

Viaje Tiempo Atras (Journey to the Past) - Thalia

SBS: Amy, was it hard singing a Spanish version of “Journey to the Past”?

AP: Oh, yeah! But the crowd in Spain really enjoyed the translated song, so I’m glad I did it. If we’re calling ourselves My Poncho Boys and naming our album after South American music groups, we might as well have some Spanish on it!

Bandit Queen - The Decemberists
somewhere in a mountain, by a starry water fountain
in an alcove hid by some trees
amidst a pile of treasure, reclining at her leisure,
my ladylove sniffs as the breeze.

SBS: One final question: who is the Bandit Queen?

AP: [laughs]

JDS: That is a very good question.
