Random thought whilst brushing my teeth

Jun 03, 2007 14:27

I was brushing my teeth this morning when a strange random thought pooped into my mind:  Why is that when some cells clump together and grow in a woman's uterus it is called, by some, life or a human being, but when other cells clump together and grow in say, the lungs or the breasts or some other organ, it's called cancer ( Read more... )

There is a train of thought in the medical community that pregnancies only last 9 months because that's all the womans body will allow, almost as though it (the fetus/baby) is a foreign object that it has to get rid of. There is also some thinking that that's why some women have such horrible morning sickness, because their body is trying to rid itself of some strange, foreign body.

by most definitions, a fetus is a parasite. I'll stop pretending to be smart now.

I think that it would probably be good to "agree to disagree" before engaging in a debate on such a heated topic as, say, abortion. However, I also think that people should know enough about both sides of a topic and current research, etc., to defend their point of view before engaging someone in a debate. This is why, most of the time, I keep my thoughts to myself, because I don't want to be dubbed a hypocrite. : )

It annoys me to no end that men act like they have any right to open their mouthes about abortion, however, I think that to them, the idea of a woman (who is supposed to GIVE life) taking a life is so absolutely wrong that they just can't handle it. I have actually thought about this a lot, and while I have sympathy for men who have been in the "Hey, that's my kid too, you cant have an abortion" situation, it's just not the same. Men are free to walk away, men are free to not have to take any responsibility for that child, a womans options are NOT the same. The thought of ANY man telling me what I can and can't do with my body just infuriates me.

And I agree with medrenmaiden, sometimes it's easier to just keep my mouth closed, but there are times when that's just not an option.

I think there is a time and place for keeping your mouth shut (being with family comes to mind), but I also place value on an individual who is willing to take risks and engage someone who has opposing views. Your thoughts are just as important to your self as your actions and relationships with others. I don't see how voicing your thoughts on a subject matter would render you a hypocrite unless your public self is completely opposite of your private self. I guess I thrive on confrontation.

What I meant when I suggested the keeping shut of ones mouth was simply that sometimes someone will say something or start an argument and not know enough to really support their argument. They don't know how to give supporting evidence or what-have-you and then they look like a fool because they can't fully defend their point of view, even if they do feel strongly about it. That's all. I definitely agree, though, in the voicing of opinions without being afraid of risk. I just think one should be prepared for the risk involved. : )
