He Wasn't Jay
"Hyung!" Chansung hissed. "Are you sure this is okay? I mean, what if people see us?" He gestured out the cafe window to the people milling about the mall square.
Junho tried to peek over Chansung's head, but the hat he was wearing was practically the size of the window.
"Chansung, your hat is too big!" He whined.
"You should talk, hyung. At least I'm not wearing a wig of dreads!"
"Shhh you two! It's fine." Wooyoung dismissed Chansung with a wave of his hand. "Our disguises make us so inconspicuous that not even our own mothers would be able to recognize us!"
Chansung and Junho both looked at each other and rolled their eyes.
Chansung sported a large, floppy denim hat with embroidered flowers, and a rainbow striped pantsuit he had stolen from a stylist noona. His face was covered with a paisley scarf and he was struggling to drink his cup of cocoa. Junho had a wig of dreads that was partially covered with an orange beanie. He wore an oversize paint splattered shirt over black jeans and he too had a scarf, but it was bunny patterned.
"Um, why are we here anyways?" asked Junho. "Shouldn't we be practicing?"
Wooyoung readjusted his teddy bear printed face mask. "We haven't had a group outing for so long, so I decided to organize one. Besides, I-I think we all need a break right now because of..." He couldn't bear to say Jaebum's name.
Junho coughed uneasily.
Chansung shakily managed to take a sip of his cocoa without spilling any on his scarf. "So..." he said bravely after an awkward pause. "A-are the other hyungs coming?"
Junho and Wooyoung sighed inwardly, glad for the change in subject.
"Soon, Chan, soon..."
Wooyoung looked out the window to see if Nichkhun, Junsu, and Taecyeon were coming, but only the occasional shopper passed by the window. He sighed sleepily and stared at the escalator across the mall square. He hadn't had a good night's sleep in days. Actually, he hadn't had a good night's sleep ever since Jaebum left. Just thinking of Jaebum made his eyes prick and he hurriedly blinked to prevent any tears from falling. When Wooyoung opened his eyes again, he saw a pink blob, bobbing down the escalator towards the cafe. His heart beat fast. He knew anyone could wear pink, but just thinking of the color pink made him think of Jaebum. He dared to hope.
The pink blob came closer and closer towards the cafe, and Wooyoung could now see that it was actually a guy that looked to be in his twenties, wearing a very familiar pink hoodie and a baseball cap titled to the side, just like how Jaebum used to wear his. His eyes widened. The guy even kind of walked like Jaebum, with a little attitude and confidence.
"Oh my god! Guys! Guys!" Wooyoung shouted, interrupting Chansung and Junho's fight over the last scone on the table. "I think I just saw Jay!" he whispered hoarsely, suddenly remembering that they were in public. "I think Jay's back you guys!"
Chansung dropped the scone and Junho made a noise like a strangled cat as he jumped up, nearly knocking over the table in the process. "JAY'S HERE?! Where?!"
"Shhh! Keep your voices down! Jay's that pink guy with the baseball cap!" Wooyoung pointed out the window at the moving pink guy.
Chansung squinted, trying to pick out the guy that Wooyoung was pointing at. When he saw the pink guy, he exclaimed, "We have to follow him!" He leaped up from his seat and ran out the door with Wooyoung and Junho behind him.
"Hyung! Hyung! HYUNG!" Chansung, with the help of his long legs, reached the pink guy first. His eyes filled with tears as he enveloped the pink guy in a huge hug. "I've missed you so much! Let me look at you hyung!" He quickly let go of the pink guy and turned him around to see a thoroughly shocked, pink wearing guy that was not Jaebum. His grin faltered. "Y-you're not Jay hyung..."
Wooyoung and Junho reached Chansung and the pink guy just in time to see Chansung sink to the floor in despair.
"Chansung?!" Junho bent down to hug the sobbing Chansung. "What's wrong?!"
"You're not Jay." Wooyoung stared at the pink clad guy in front of them.
"Um, no, I'm not. I'm Jihyuk..." said the pink guy sheepishly. "Sorry...."
"No, i-it's our mistake. Sorry." Wooyoung tried to smile apologetically, but his face wouldn't allow it. Instead, it came out to be more of a grimace.
"No, i-it's cool. Anyways, well, I'm sorry I'm not your Jay." Jihyuk shrugged apologetically before continuing on his way.
Wooyoung wanted to say, 'You'll never be our Jay', but instead he sank to the floor next to Chansung and leaned against him. Hot tears began to pour down his face, but he was too exhausted and too disappointed to care.
"He wasn't Jay!" he heard Chansung cry into Junho's chest. "He wasn't Jay!"
