Rules of Birthday Season

Jun 03, 2010 09:50

I love May.
It's my birthday month.  And a few other people in my circle have birthdays in the same month or in the vicinity thereof. And its Autumn (probably my favourite season). And its just prior to the mid-year holidays. All in all, a good time.

I love Birthdays.
Even though I am steadily and ruthlessly getting older, I really don't mind! A birthday isn't about age, its about 'specialness'! It's one day in the year that is yours and yours alone! (Rule number One of birthdays:  Forget whoever ELSE has a birthday on your particular day! It's not about THEM!  Unless you are a twin, pretend on your birthday that no one else shares it!)
I never fail to feel special on my birthday. I suppose I have always been fortunate in that I am surrounded by people who do make a fuss of birthdays. After all...I trained 'em!  (Rule number Two:  Make sure you REMIND people that it is your birthday!   Rule number Three:  Don't assume others will make your fun for you. Go ahead and plan something YOU want to do!)
I never have particular expectations for my birthday.  I am never disappointed. If I should only get one present, and can arrange to share at least some part the day with friends and family, I am ecstatically happy! (Rule number Four:  Be flexible about plans, compromising if they don't pan out exaclty.  Rule number Five:  Decide to treat even the smallest of acknowledgments on that day as if they were acts of unwarrented, costly, and precious, love!)

This year the birthday season started with Son-in-law exactly a week before mine.  It was the big three-oh, and we threw him a party!

We had balloons, and some music!

But back to ME.
I planned things really well this year for my own birthday!  It fell upon a Sunday, and I invited some friends to share a coffee at my favourite coffee shop after church. Very casual, arrive when you can, stay as long or as briefly as you like, just share the morning with me.  Piper-Payer picked up the bill, and there I sat, like a queen, with the smell of the best coffee in town permeating my nostrils, while my adoring subjects floated in and out around me.  It just doesn't get any better than that!

Photos of this will have to wait.  Daughter took pics of the event (and nearly ran herself ragged playing hostess, placing orders, making sure everyone kept getting their refills - thanks!  You da best!!!) so will get them from her soon and will put them up here.

Which brings me to the next birthday, which is daughter's...and she learnt from the best....me!  So will be enjoying yet another celebration soon.

I love birthdays.
