Hi friends and family,
I have another update, mostly because im not sure what to do with my evenings in Siem Reap. Today I had a different guide, who was much nicer, though he doesn't seem to like the Vietnamese, but that is rooted in a historical and political context. Anyway, today we set out at 7 and in the course of the many hours of temple-ing I drank about 3 or 4 liters of water. I really sweat alot, my guide commented on it, I think he was afraid I was going to die. But he also did seem to be fan of my pale skin, he commented on it twice. Nothing like having skin prone to melanoma to attract men. Anyway I saw the rest of Angkor Thom today and Ta Prohm aka the tomb raider tomb. It is quite amazing, the way these giant trees have grown up and around the rocks is spectacular. We got back to the hotel at around 11, it wouldve taken longer but there were a couple of structures I didn't want to climb. My afternoon I napped, read went to the old market for mangosteens and rambuttans! I then went to get some kind of foot and arm treatment which was quite relaxing, before i went back to my hotel for about 3 hours.
This evening I was hungry, the kind of walking and sweating I have been doing has been making ravenous, so I set out this evening for dinner and I was craving something salty and I really needed a break from thai/khmer food. I read about this pizza place on the end of the old market that I hadn't yet explored. I looked for a tuk-tuk that are usually parked outside the hotel, but there were none.
But was there was a motorbike taxi, I had decided not to ride on one before I came However the traffic in siem reap is very very slow and the trip was very quick. Also in Cambodia, no joke , 12 year old girls operate them and babies ride on fine, so I figured I could do it fine and plus its part of my quest for a somewhat authentic experience. Anyway I got on the motorbike and away we went. The first thing that I thought was something Jonathan said about crossing the busy streets in Bangkok, "Remember they believe in reincarnation and you don't." Yeah I was definately scared. Now aside from the sheer stupidity of getting on one in the first place, I forget how dusty siem reap is, bc it was evening I didn't bring sunglasses. I thinking I will be picking out grit from my eyelashes for the next month. The ride was very uneventful but confirmed for me that I have no need to ever ride one again. We arrived to the old market, and I was so very glad, but being the idiot that I am I of course burned myself on the tailpipe. Which didn't hurt right away, but I knew that I should get some cream on it very soon. I of course confidently walked into a cambodian pharmacy and asked for burn cream. After realizing I didn't mean a gauze pad the woman gave me a box of cream, and I walked to the restaurant where there was apparently good pizza. Ok so the pizza was pretty terrible and it took forever to arrive at the table, but that did give me time to read the insert from the cream, which I had already applied to my burn. So the cream which apparently you need a prescription for is from Indonesia, and in english it is written that it is for the management of "chronic ulcers, wounds, excezma, chronic dermatitis and burns." I was glad burns was listed and I had put on the semi-appropriate cream. WARNING: GROSSNESS AHEAD. So because I was bored waiting for the terrible pizza, I read on the paper insert, "Bioplacenton is a special extract of placenta, which exert stimulating influences on metabolic processes in the cell,"! I took cell bio along time ago, but I don't think that is scientifically sound.
So there I sat like a moron with placenta on my ankle, terrible pizza in my mouth, grit in my eyebrows and eyelids. The blister that I am getting will be an excellent addition to the scraped knee I got slipping onto wet concrete in Bangkok. Tomorrow, is my last day of temple viewing, while I have an extra day to sightsee in Siem Reap, I think the heat and humidity is a bit too much for more viewing and I think tomorrow night I am going to want to sample the nightlife and not wake up early the following morning and maybe pet a mangy dog (just kidding). Keep your fingers crossed that I don't have any more mishaps, and don't worry, I will be walking.-
