Title: Rescue Me
Pairing: Demi/Selena
Rating: PG-13/R
Summary: Demi's a firefighter and Selena's caught in a fire.

It had been a week since Selena’s sudden departure and Demi was considerably off her game. She was no longer willing to socialize openly with her team. Any time one of them would muster up the courage to try talking to her she shrugged them off. Even Bieber’s innocent charm couldn’t get the corners of her mouth to go upwards. The drastic change had been a stinging shock to guys like Bieber and Taylor, who hadn’t known her as all their lives as the three brothers had. For the Jonas’ her brush off was a burn worse than they’d ever gotten from any fire.

But anyone who really looked at her could see she was wounded and it wasn’t difficult to figure out why. Even Joe noticed that when Selena left the Demi he’d known his whole life had gone with her. She was stoic and nonchalant where she used to be vibrant and lively. Instead of playing cards with the guys, Demi spent her time laid up on the couch, staring at the ceiling with a far off look on her face.

Selena’s absence had quelled her fiery nature in some ways and ran it wild where it shouldn’t have. Demi’s nature had always been tinted with a reckless desire but now she was taking greater risks than she ever had before. Her controlled attitude towards the job had been lost. She’d begun diving into fires without backup or warning. Kevin had given up yelling at her because it only made her draw farther into herself. She was putting more than her own life on the line but her frustration blinded her. The whole team knew something was seriously awry. Their dynamic was thrown off kilter because of it and they were willing to do anything to fix it, to get their friend back to normal.

It was the reason the five of them were having a whisper war at the table while Demi was quietly listening to music on the couch. All of the firefighters were hunched on their elbows, using the table for support as words blended together. Ideas were flowing rapidly into the open air in front of them. But every idea said was quickly shot down and replaced by another. Mostly because Joe and Bieber had turned the brain storming session into a contest of who could come up with the worst idea.

“I think we should all sing her a song. That way she knows how much we care about her. She’s in a delicate state right now and might be looking for some understanding,” Bieber explained sympathetically. Joe scoffed at him.

“That’s stupid. I say we smack her a few times. Ya know, like they do in the movies. Maybe she’ll snap out of it long enough to tell us why she’s so sad.”

Nick rolled his eyes, “We already know why, dummy. It’s just a matter of getting her to tell us how or what went down that night. We all know it’s got something to do with Selena. With Selena here Demi was happier than she’d been in a long time, Selena suddenly vanishes and she’s more miserable than ever. It fits.”

“Yeah,” Lautner agreed. “It all fits a little too well. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that Demi has some real feelings for that girl and whatever happened was beyond her control. We all know that when Demi wants something she’ll try her hardest to get it and keep it. And we also know that if something wasn’t standing in her way she’d be out there right now getting her back. Biebes, you got pretty close to Selena. You know anything special about her?”

“I- I, well, um, I,” he sputtered helplessly. Kevin grabbed him and shook him. “C’mon, what the hell is it, Justin?”

“Well, she once told me that she moved here to put some distance between her and her family and that if her mom ever found out she was living with Demi she’d shit bricks. Something about her mom having a bad experience with the city.”

Kevin rubbed his jaw in thought but they were cut off by the sound of his phone ringing. “Kevin Jonas,” he answered in his professional voice. As the other person spoke, his face hardened and his jaw clenched. “Yes, I understand. We’re available right now and can be there within half an hour.” Kevin hung up and let out a breath. They all knew what a call like that meant and it caused them to sit up straight, ready for the worst.

“An F4 tornado hit just a couple miles outside of the city and demolished a small town. The number of casualties and injuries is still undetermined but with the damage they estimate roughly three hundred. We’re gonna be one of the first teams on site and I expect to be there in less than half an hour. So gear up, we’re heading out in five minutes. I’ll get Demi.” The four of them nodded and ran for the fire poles as Kevin made his way to the living room area.

“Yo, Dems, get your ass up, we got a call. A bad F4 hit in the burbs. We’ve got first response cleanup and rescue duty. Five minutes until go time.”

Demi nodded and was up like lightening, dashing for a pole and her suit. Kevin followed her down and suited up as he’d been doing for most of his life. The team was ready a minute early and scrambled for their respective vehicles as Kevin yelled them out. Demi and Nick were once again seated in their favorite engine with Nick at the wheel and Demi prepping for the heavy duty cleanup. Their engine was second in the caravan of three that flew down the street at top speed with lights flashing and sirens wailing.

Five minutes into the ride, after they had left the inner city, Demi’s cell phone sprung to life. Nick glanced over at her when she didn’t answer it after the second ring. She was looking at the screen blankly, hesitating. She felt Nick’s stare and looked up to meet it. He was urging her to answer it. A call this late at night could be nothing less than important. She answered just after the fourth ring. “Hello?”

“Demi,” a soft voice murmured over the crackle. It was then that Demi felt her chest tighten and her breath stop in her lungs. She hadn’t expected to hear that voice for a long time and it soothed her flaming heart as she heard it now.

“Selena.” The rest of her words choked off as feelings flooded her and thoughts raced through her mind.

“Demi, God, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I never meant for all this to happen. But I really need your help right now. I didn’t know who else to call.”

“No, no, it’s fine. What happened?”

“Demi, a tornado hit my mother’s house. We managed to get to the basement before it hit but the house collapsed on us. Me and my mom are trapped in the basement. She’s pretty hurt but I think I’m alright. And I know this is a lot to ask of you but I need you here. Her house is on the outskirts and no help is bound for hours still. I don’t know how much longer the foundation can hold up.” Demi felt her heart pounding into her chest at Selena’s words.

“Where’re you at, Selena? The team got the call and we’re already on our way. Just tell me the address. Please.” Demi needed to get there in time. She needed her to be alright. The past week had been horrible without her and she didn’t want to think about what would happen if she didn’t make it.

Selena rattled off the street and number before Demi hung up with a promise that she would get to her. Her eyes slid shut and she let out a relieved sigh as she relived the last two minutes in her mind. It was amazing how just hearing Selena’s voice could make her heavy soul feel lighter. She opened her eyes to find Nick looking at her. She’d known him long enough to know what that look meant. He was ready and willing to do this for her and he was just waiting for her command.

Demi smiled for the first time in over a week, nodding her head. Nick let out a howl of excitement and pressed the pedal down harder as she grabbed the intercom.

“Lautner, Kev, this is Red Ranger. There’s been a change of plans. Instead of heading straight into the center of town we’re taking the westbound exit to the outskirts. There’s this girl I’ve gotta save.”

Kevin could hear the smile in her voice and couldn’t keep one off his own face as he picked up his own intercom. “Red Ranger, this is Black Ranger, you have the go ahead.” As he soon as he finished speaking, Lautner’s engine started pulling back and his voice came in over the static. “Blue Ranger, this is Green Ranger, you have permission to lead.”

Nick grinned as he pressed his foot down more and shifted to the engine’s highest speed. The rest of the team followed their lead and together they fled down the highway. Demi could feel herself getting more anxious the closer they got. She was on the edge of her seat, nervous energy tumbling off of her in bursts.

When the headlights hit the first of the debris, the engine was forced into a crawl. Demi reached up and flicked on the big spotlights to increase visibility. The fleet made its way slowly but surely down the old, beaten up country road. Pieces of housing, vegetation, cars, and tree branches lined the streets. Natural devastation made Demi’s stomach turn more than anything. It was a sight that still left the most experienced firefighters in awe.

At last they rolled up on an old, two story country style house. The bottom floor seemed to have caved in on itself, leaving the second story to look like it was on ground level. Nick barely had time to brake before Demi was out and running for the house, shouting for Selena.

“Selena! Selena, can you hear me!?” Demi yelled as she jumped up onto the wooden awning and stuck her head through the broken window. She stilled for a moment to listen for movement and heard the snapping of wooden before a sweet sound destroyed her worry. “Demi, is that you?”

“Yeah. Yeah, it’s me. You okay?” She said as she reached for her flashlight. Demi flicked it on and shined in down into the room to find that there was a big hole in the center. She could just make out Selena’s kneeling form in the corner. “I’m good but mom’s not doing so well, she’s bleeding. I think she got hit in the head.”

“Just keep her stable and I’ll be down there in no time,” Demi said as moved away from the window and jumped to solid ground. Lautner and Kevin had pulled the other two engines up around hers and shone their spotlights on the house. The five men stood by their respective engines, waiting for orders because even though Kevin was captain, this was Demi’s call.

“Alright guys, I’m gonna need the harness and pulley. We’ve got two women trapped in the basement but the first floor caved in and there’s a big hole from the second floor to the basement. It’s more than wide enough to for me to shimmy down but it’s the fragileness of the structure I’m worried about. So nice and easy going down and I’m gonna need some light in there. Got it?”

“So does this mean we’re getting Selena back?” Bieber said excitedly. The other five scrunched their faces in incredulity before Joe reached over and smacked him in the back of the head. Bieber rubbed his skull and pouted like a kicked puppy as the others became a flurry of movement. Demi slid into the harness as Lautner backed up the engine with the rope and pulley closer to the fallen house.

Soon she had the rope through the rings and was descending down to the basement with Joe and Lautner keeping the rope steady. Demi landed on the remains of the first floor and squatted down to she was a little bit above eye level with the standing Selena.

“Hey,” Demi said as she smiled brightly at the girl she’d been missing all week. “Hi,” was the breathy response she got.

“I’m gonna bring your mother up first since she’s injured and then I’ll come back for you, okay?” Selena nodded and moved out of the way so she could slip down. After a lot of awkward movements and positioning, Selena’s mom was finally in the neighboring harness and slowly being lifted up and out of the house. Kevin and Joe met her at the window to help her detach and move Selena’s groggy mom into the awaiting stretcher.

Before Demi could go back in Selena’s mom grabbed a fistful of her uniform and yanked her down to her level. “Thank you for coming. It means a lot,” she said. Demi nodded and the older woman let go so the guys could carry her away.

The firefighter descended again and was met with an extremely calm looking Selena. Demi kneeled down and held her hand out for the older girl to take. She grabbed it without hesitation and allowed herself to be heaved up onto the remains of the first floor landing. Together the two of them stood to their full height before their eyes met.

Selena stepped closer and gently took the firefighter’s face in her hands. Demi felt the air stop in her lungs as her hands traveled up higher to her helmet. She boldly grasped the edges of the hat before lifting it off her head and letting it fall to the floor. Selena let her eyes glance over every inch of the other girl’s face before settling back into her comforting gaze.

“My hero,” she whispered as her hands found a way around Demi’s neck. Demi’s own hands found their way around the other girl’s waist and tugged until she was pressed against her. Selena brought her the rest of the way and touched their lips together softly. They stayed like that for a moment before Demi pressed in harder and deepened the kiss.

They broke apart to the sound of a siren wailing and giggled when Joe’s distant yelling at Bieber filtered down. Demi rested her forehead against Selena’s for a moment and sighed in content. The moment was interrupted as the floor beneath them started faltering. Demi quickly unwrapped one of her arms and tugged on the rope, instructing Selena to hold on tight.

By the time the girls reached the window, the house was quivering noticeably. Much like the first time the two met, the house collapsed just as they cleared the window. But unlike the first time, they walked away in each other's arms.

leformat is both the reason why everything takes so long to get done and why i manage to finish at all. and the only reason she gets her name at the end of almost every chapter is because she begs me for it.
