It’s been lifetimes since James died, and was brought back. Since that huge, wild adventure, beginning with his rise to Commodore and ending in immortality. He still hasn’t forgotten who he was- but those scant few years hardly seem to matter in the here and now, spending his days alongside his once-enemy, Jack Sparrow. Captain Jack Sparrow, of course.
He remembers a time when all that mattered to him was the benefit and safety of others; and though this is still important to him, lately he’s become rather piratical. He thinks a bit more about doing right by himself, and a little less about selflessly helping others. He would call it selfishness- others would call it growing a spine.
Like Jack, he’s fought in several wars, generally on the same side as Jack. There were occasions where they separated- During the Napoleonic Wars, for example, which Jack refused to take part in (Too cold). But in the end, he usually finds his way back. Sailing still has a hold on him, and the ocean still runs through his blood; but he’s happy enough to just stay with his friend and partner. Even if they have a habit of arguing and insulting wildly.
James has lived through three hundred years of history, and it has worked through his personality. Though most of the base elements are there, certain ones are enhanced- he was closed-off before, and now he's very, very secretive. The only person he's regularly relaxed with is Jack. This can make James seem- as always- uptight, boring, and rigid. And that, of course, is nothing new.
