So I wrote this and I love it :)
And I'm posting it today on my poor neglected pages to keep OneBadCat alive!! Don't delete my journal...

"So, we've got a plan," Alec said, looking around the table at the Department heads who had spent hours with him hashing this mission out. "Max will infiltrate the lab and find out how much the Conclave know about Manticore..."
Max held his gaze but her jaw was tight, a sure sign that she wasn't entirely happy with things.
Ames White straightened up from where he'd been lounging against the wall, beyond the industrious circle of furious debate but still inside the orbit of the group. He crossed the room and leaned on the table, his face inches from hers.
"Would it make you feel any better if I didn't want you to do this...?" he growled.
Max gaped at him but managed to whisper "Yes..."
"Then feel better!" he snapped, turning away sharply. "You've got 24 hours; and then I'm coming in to get you..."
His announcement caused no small amount of muttering from the others; but Max didn't notice, she was busy staring at her hands, while she tried not to smile.
